Ds is so sick. He went to the pedi on Wednesday. Lungs clear, no ear infection, no fever, just a bad cough and cold. His coughing is so bad it sounds like he is gagging and going to throw up and then he cries after each time. I may call the pedi but I know there is not much they can do. If they say bring him in again, I will but.....Dd has a very long awaited feeding therapy evaluation. We have waited months for this, they rescheduled once and then I had to cancel last week because she was really sick, so now it is today. She needs this appointment badly. I just don't know what to do, but I do have to decide soon so I can make/cancel/reschedule any necessary appointments. What would you do???

I would stick it out for the feeding therapy eval for your DD. Like you said, there isn't much the ped can do for your DS. Have you tried sitting him in a bathroom with the shower running to see if the steam helps break up his cough? Good luck, I know it's hard to choose when they both have different important needs!

I agreee with the PP, stick it out and get the feeding eval. I know you have waited a long time for this one!! Definitely try the hot shower and steam thing. I think it really helps at night.

I would keep the feeding eval. If his cough is barky or wheezy, he should probably be seen. Lauren had that same gagging until it sounds like she is going to choke cough and I used their humidifier as much as possible (naps/bedtime) and saline spray to clear nasal passages and it went away pretty quick.

Yup, that is the kind of cough. How long is pretty quick?

we also tried vicks vapor rub on chest and feet and they also sell plug in units w/a little nightlight for an outlet. No mess just place a pad in the slot

does you ped have walk in hours, maybe you can take your DS after the feeding eval? i would not change your feeding eval, they are a pain to reschedule and it sounds like your DD really needs it. just keep the humidifier on and try to keep him hydrated today and bring him tomorrow if you can't do a walk in appt. good luck!!

Great I just called the pedi and was talking to the nurse and she heard him coughing through the monitor and said it sounds like croup. So I am gonna do the bathroom thing and then when he goes down for his nap later see how he is and call back if it is not better. And they would need to look at him to see if he needs an antibiotic. Should I let it wait until tomorrow we have tons planned (dr appt for me, oil change, dryer repair, etc) which I'd rather not do because I don't want him being uncomfortable if he can get better but that would mean canceling dd's appt. I thought I was upset before, now I am really upset!!

Sounds like you have waited for the feeding eval for a while now I would go to that appt and after that drop anything non essential and get his cough looked into, is it possible to swing by the Dr before or after the feeding eval? I hope your day gets better sending :hug99: your way.

Yeah I am gonna try to do that if it does not end up being too late to screw up dinner and bedtime. Otherwise I guess I will cancel my appointment for tomorrow and take him then to the pedi. He does not have a fever and hasn't and we were just there on Wednesday. So as much as I don't want him to wait, I guess one more night will be ok. He slept ok last night, just alot of coughing and then right back to bed.

I would talk to Dr. Both my girls had croup and then it turned into a sinus infection in one and pneumonia for the other (she was hopspitalized for it!).

Both my girls started with a cough and then progressed a week later to fevers with the one with pneumonia being worse and very little drainage- my sinus infection girl has lots of drainage and a low grade.

I would definatly put your plans on hold for a few days- as hard as it may seem. Can you leave DS with someone while you take DD to her appointment?? The Clinic would NOT like croup spread around, it is very contagious- but really no treatment. It would be very bad for any kids there that have respitory problems (poor breathing, asthma, lung disease) to catch it if he spread it.

I am sure the Clinic would understnad, they work with kids. I had to reschedule our Occup. Therapy appointment 2x after waiting 3 months to get in, they were very happy since it would not be accurate if she was ill.

Good Luck and I am sorry abotu all the illness!

Yup, going to the pedi at 3:30. I was going to take him tomorrow but he sounds so bad, I don't want to make him wait. I just hope there is something they can do for him and it is not a trip for them to tell me he has croup and we have to wait it out. Otherwise, I'd rather just keep him home even if we do not go to dd's appt. As far as her appt, I have a call in to reschedule. This really sucks. I wish I could split myself and my car in half and take them both to where they need to be.

The nasty cold/cough is making it's rounds here too. I would keep your appt. and take lots of tissues with you and try to keep him away from other kids, etc. The throwing up at night is due to the post nasal drainage. I've been giving mine their zyrtec to dry up the snot and help with that aspect of it. Do you have an antihisthamine you can give him at bedtime? That will probably take care of the gagging!

okay i've never tried this but i've heard it works wonders...put vicks on his feet when he goes to bed and then put socks on over it---other moms have claimed it's better by morning
    just a thought!

DS had croup 3 times and they can give you a steroid shot. It clears up very fast after that...totally worth the trip as croup can get very serious very fast (we were in the ER the 1st time it happened, getting a nebulizer mixed with the 'roids...sucked!)

Go to the feeding appointment though, your Pedi should be able to work out a time that works as I am sure they know how important the appointment is. Good luck and I hope everyone is eating a feeling better soon!
