So scary

Tonight I had a completely terrifying experience. Ana has a bit of an anxiety thing (she always has) and its that much worse when she is tired. She didn't really nap much this afternoon so bedtime was quite the whine-fest. We still do a bottle at night and the girls drink it while laying in boppies in the living room. Ana was crying while I got the bottles ready but by the time I came in with them, both girls were laying in the boppies waiting. I usually still between them and shush them to calm them down.

All of sudden I notice Ana is bright red and then she pulls out the bottle and starts screaming her anxious scream/cry. The nipple was pretty collapsed so I think she got frustrated and then got upset, and then she started choking on the milk in her mouth. So I picked her up and put her on my shoulder to help her stop choking and she was coughing and screaming and then all of a sudden silent and limp. I held her out in front of me and her face was red and she was limp. OMG I totally panicked and started screaming her name and shaking her. Then I put her back on my shoulder and started to tap on her back all the while thinking about my crp training. It was probably a couple of seconds and then she started to cough and cry again and I could see her tongue was blueish. I held her and tried to calm her down, but all she wanted was her bottle. So I held and fed her (the first time in months that she let me hold the bottle for her) and shushed her to try to calm her down. By the time she finished she was my sweet little Ana again. She burped and babbled and put the bottle down on the table (the signal she is ready to go to bed). I layed her down, she looked at her sister in the other crib and they both giggled. She put her thumb in her mouth and they are now asleep.

I'm sitting here totally shaking. I called DH to tell him what happened.. I think when she was crying and choking she was unable to catch her breath and thats why she went limp. She wasn't 'unconscious' and screaming her name, shaking her and tapping her back made her cough and breathe. At what point do you talk to the pedi about anxiousness? She can be such a mellow, easy going kid, but she does have some quirky anxious tendencies that I'm a little worried about.

So my little public service announcement is, if you have the opportunity to take a crp class do it. I didn't have to do it, but I am happy that I know what to do if anything really bad happens. It was definitely 5 hours well spent. I'm going to go have a glass of wine now and call a friend and check on the girlies obsessively all night long.

Dh and I have both been taught CPR and have a quick guide on our fridge at all times. This is a GREAT reminder!!

OMG. So scary. I am glad we had the training when the boys were in the NICU. Great job hanging in there and staying "calm." I am glad she is alright. I would definitely mention it to the Ped.

Scary moment. Glad it turned out ok. :hug99: I'm sorry dh wasn't there with you when it happened. My boys both do the breath holding thing and pass out when they cry hard, and as often as it happens, I still freak out EACH time. And I always have to call dh and tell him it happened again! It's not fair when you have to deal with those scary moments alone!

Oh that is SO scary! I had a similar thing happen with Eloise, and I was shaking forever after that. I'm so glad you had the training to fall back on.

OMG, Leighann, I need a glass of wine just reading about that. Completely terrifying. I often think that I'm not sure i'll remember the cpr training we did if i need it....

I'm not surprised you kept your wits about you; you are that way - and i completely understand the obsessive baby checking that will happen tonight.

Hang in there; deep breaths, deep draughts of wine.

So scary!!! I am really glad everything is okay!!

My DD is a breath holder - the first time it happened DH and I totally panicked and were just about to admintster CPR when she came to and let out a huge cry. She had fallen off a small table she had tried to climb and I think it shocked her - she let out one big cry and then it was like she just froze in this silent cry eerie way. Her eyes rolled back in her head and she wasn't breathing and was limp - her ped said it is very common and comes on for some kids when they are *very* upset and crying really hard, or if they get scared suddenly. I just want you to know in case something like this happens again, it can be a "normal" thing - kids supposedly outgrow this. I Googled it a ton and it fit DD perfectly and her ped. confirmed it. It might be something to discuss with your ped.

Anyway, I am just glad everything is okay and I hope you really did enjoy a nice glass of wine after that scare.

I post about my story all the time but with the same message as you....you NEVER know when you will need it!! I have performed CPR on my son 3 times. Not for breath holding but we are trying to get an exact diagnosis for it. I totally recommend having a CPR checklist in your house posted. That way in case of anything you can grab that sheet. (I say that even though the first time we had to do cpr on Mitchell he was 6 mos old, only out of the nicu for 3 mos and we had the sign posted 10 ft away from where we were but forgot about it!). I think everyone should at least know the basics of cpr if you are going to be around any children at all. At least know what to do in an emergency. I was frightened when my ils told me what they "thought" you do in an emergency!

Thanks everyone. I'm feeling a little better about it this morning, but didn't sleep much last night.

I thought I'd post links to some useful sites. My work offered the cpr class, but I know that not all of you have that luxury. Here is the Red Cross website so you can see where they are holding classes in your area.

Also, here are two websites for Infant and toddler/child cpr and choking.

I am so glad she is ok. Thank you so much for the links. I took the class but I feel I need to take it again. For me, that is something I feel I need a annual refresher on. :hug99:
