So now I have to babyproof the upper shelves

Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine he could climb that shelving unit. Not yet, at least. But, the thrill of the new is too powerful and climb it he did. Now I've made my first call to the Poison Control Hotline (and undoubtedly not the last).

First, let me say that I didn't see any of this happen. I was cleaning up a poop mess in their room when they ran into the office. They like to sit in the chairs and look out the window in there so I wasn't concerned about them being there for a few minutes. Then I heard crying. It was very confusing when I came in because Trent had red on his chin and all down his chest but it wasn't blood and he appeared to be angry at Trevor for taking something from him. Then I saw the something and that explained it all.

Trent got down a toy I should have thrown away rather than moving to the top shelf. It was one of those dipper birds... the nostalgia throwback thing with a glass straw & bulb body that contains some red liquid. You get the beak wet and it dips repeatedly to "drink" from a cup. He apparently put the bulb part in his mouth and bit down. The red stuff was all over him (and it stains every bit as much as a Sharpie). As I'm rushing him to the bathroom to wash his mouth out, I hear him crunch down on glass. He was chewing the glass shards! I stuck my finger between his teeth to stop him and put his face under the faucet to run water through his mouth without allowing him to swallow it. He was most upset by the process but it seemed like the thing to do. Then I looked in his mouth for signs of damage. Nothing. Once I set him down, he stopped crying and went right back to playing. I thought he'd probably be OK but I called poison control anyhow because I have no idea what that red liquid is and I figured they'd know what to watch for with possible glass ingestion.

The good news is that they said he should be just fine. They told me what to watch for with the glass (which I guess is really pretty obvious) and that that red stuff is non-toxic.

Wow, you must have been a terrified mess! I'm just upset my kids keep eating bugs, but that would throw me for a real loop. I'm glad to hear everything is ok.

So this morning I posted (see above) with a "gosh I'm glad that's not me and I'm sorry it happened to you" post... 5 hours later, and DD figured out how to open the liquor cabinet while I'm tending to other DD. I come in to find my baby banging a bottle of tequila on the floor! Needless to say, I broke out the security locks and installed them myself (DH claimed they didn't need one on this cabinet b/c the knob is too high). Hmm....Live and learn

Yikes! I'm so glad there was no real harm done, but how scary. Mine are just starting a new phase of getting into everything. We had gotten overconfident because even after they learned to walk, they left a lot of things alone (didn't open our desk drawers, etc.) -- but now they are realizing how much they've missed!

So glad they're okay. (We had to call poision control on their first bday.)

Our boys started officially climbing this week...coffee table, chairs, end tables, even using their ride-on to push over to something too high and using it as a step stool to get a leg up. It's going to change the entire keep-them-safe game plan.

OMG! How horrifying and terrifying! Isn't great to have help/info just a phone call away.
