I told dh to secure the dressers to the wall in the babies room a LONG time ago. I ASSUMED he did it. Big mistake...I should have checked. Yesterday during nap time when my kids were NOT napping I heard a huge crash and I instantly knew what it was and I couldn't run fast enough to get there. I could hear Mitchell crying and I just kept thinking...KEEP crying. Luckily (I hate to say it that way) I keep the beds close enough to the dressers that it didn't fall all the way to the ground. All the drawers came out but poor Mitchell was pinned between the bed and the dresser screaming and McKenna was screaming bc the humidifier fell off the top of the dresser along with the picture frames on top of her while she was on her pillow.
THANKFULLY nobody even had a bruise. They are both okay. We are SOOO lucky. Suffice to say...they are both secured to the wall now...I CHECKED this time. I can't believe how lucky we are that nobody was hurt but man that crash I heard scared the crap out of me!!!

My psa to remind eveyone to secure their dressers...I know I have climbers but it could still happen to non climbers...

I could have written your post 6 months ago. The same thing happened to me. I was a mess. My kids were okay as well. Thank God your babies are alright. About two months ago, the kids pulled the big screen down on them. Another scary experience but they were okay...I went to Home Depot and they sell big screen anchors which my husband put up. Again, glad they are okay. :)

That's SO scary!! My DH doesn't want to secure anything into the walls (holes) - so they can't really be anywhere without my supervision (unless securely in the superyard).

My dh is the same way.....doesn't want to put a lot of holes in the walls. Right now, they're not climbing - YET. But it's something that's on my list to do.....and if he doesnt want holes in the walls I'm thinking I might just have to do it when he's at work.

How exactly do you do it, though?? I was just thinking of buying some screws & screwing it to the wall....but seems like there should be an easier way.

This has been on my list since they were 6 months old but we keep putting it off. We even have the straps and screws (or whatever it is that One Step Ahead sells) but we have plaster walls and it just seems like such a pain. Plus, our DDs have not shown much desire to climb anything. I keep telling DH it only takes one time -- but there are so many things to do that are higher on the priority list...
    Thanks for the reminder!

How scary. :hug99: Thanks for the reminder.

A question for you all. We have a long six-drawer dresser that is a very heavy type of dresser in their room (bacically like an adult bedroom set that is extremely heavy-- I cannot even pull it out by myself to get things that have fallen behind it). Would this need to be secured down or just the taller more light-weight ones?

I have a big 9 drawer dresser in the girls room that I wasn't concerned about tipping...but now I'm thinking, I should probably get the mirror/shelf on top of it secured somehow. AND the chest of drawers in Gabe's room needs to be secured.

I'm not all that handy around the house...is this something that I can do or do I need to hire someone in to do it?

OMG How scary!!! I can never run fast enough when I hear one of *those* crashes! I am so glad they are ok! I have the brackets in the garage and need to make DH do ours (when his arm heals)!

I would go ahead and do it anyway. The dresser in my room is quite heavy as well with a mirror attached. My kids like to open the bottom drawers and stand in them. It only takes a second...doing laundry, dishes, etc. for something to happen. To say myself regret in the long run, I would do it. :)

How scary! I am glad that everyone is alright. I plan on securing the dressers/nightstands to the walls. I told DH that holes in the walls are easy to repair compared to the safety of the children.

Guess my DH has some drilling to do tonight. Yikes. Glad everyone is okay, and thanks for the reminder to do what we should have done a long time ago.

How scary! I'm so glad that no one got hurt. The girls bookshelf is anchored to the wall but used to worry about the adjustable shelves sliding off and hurting them. Fortunately for us that never happened.

Sorry to hear about your scare but glad everyone is ok.

A few years ago a 3 year old twin girl a few towns over was killed by furniture, you can read about her here. There are some great links on the page too. Definitely proof that a few holes in the wall is well worth the trouble! If you don't want to secure the furniture to the walls it would probably be best to remove the furniture all together.
