Snap N Go on an airplane

We're traveling from Europe to the U.S. in a month and then have a couple of flights within the U.S. as we go about to see all the relatives for the first time. We didn't buy the babies a seat but I know that sometimes if there is an extra seat available they might let us have it. So we want to bring our carseats with the Snap N Go double stroller. My question is -- if we get on a flight where there isn't an extra seat available so therefore can't take on either car seat will the airline gate check all 3 pieces of the stroller -- the 2 carseats and the Snap N Go? I don't want to check the carseats ahead of time so that we can use them to get us to the gate but I don't want to get stuck with them telling us they won't gate check everything. Has anyone done this before?

I've done this several times before. They will gate check the carseats and snap n go.

Yup, they can gate check if there is no room.

What pp's say is correct. We're going on Friday US > Europe. We have 1 lap (in business) and my husband is in economy (with one on his lap). My oldest is in business with me. Long story how this all happened. We'll take both carriers (one on the floor in business and my husband is hoping for another seat - and the chance that nobody wants to sit next to him if there is :p ).

However, I think it's rare these days to have extra seats, especially on American airliners on US - European routes, and especially in the upcoming months. Fingers crossed.

On the way back to the US we have 5 seats in economy ... so that will be easier!

I've done this several times. We have a travel bag for our McLaren stroller that the snap-n-go fits in and we put the stroller in that before gate checking it each time (make sure to put the gate-check tag on the bag, not the stroller itself). Since the snap-n-go sort of has a lot of loose parts to open up, we found this protected it better. We just stacked the carseats in eachother. There's a lot of work boarding and unboarding the plane and going through security, but it's a good way to travel.

Thanks for all the replies. That is very good to know. I think we will take a travel bag to protect the Snap N Go. I'm curious about Sofiesmom post about bringing the carseat on the floor in business class. We're actually traveling in business (thanks to DH's work) so can we bring the carseats with us even if there isn't an extra seat? Do they allow you to just put them on the space on the floor in front of the seat? We already asked for the bulkhead with bassinets so maybe we won't need the carseats. I'm really anxious about the 9 hour flight because the boys hate sitting on our laps for very long but I guess we'll make it.

We've flown a few times with the girls and their pram (not a snap N go, wish we'd had one ...). Word of warning: if you bag the stroller at the airplane then on arrival it will NOT be left near the airplane door for you. Instead you'll have to carry your children, the car seats and your carry-on baggage through passport control and only collect the stroller from the outsize section of the baggage reclaim hall. This is what happened to us. Twice, until someone explained what was going on.

    Have a good holiday.

That wasn't our experience. The stroller and carseats were all left for us together at the door of the airplane. Although, once it took a while to get there and we had to ask the luggage people for it. They then quickly brought it to us. We even did this going from the US to Canada. Maybe just double check with the specific airline.

We gate checked our snap n' go and carseats the first time we flew. We had no problem whatsoever and made it very easy with the layover. We could just put them in the car seats and hook them in the snap n' go and down the terminal we went. Very smooth and accomodating
