I am trying to pack in the protien. I have a hard time choking down the ensure so I was planning on doing a fruit smoothie. I am having issues with trying to find a good high protien powder that I can mix in with frozen fruits. Any suggestions, I prefer citrus fruits or tropical fruits - the seeds in berries are icky when they are in smoothies. Any recipes or ideas would be great - thanks!!

When I was making the shakes myself I used the vanilla flavored Whey protein powder that I found at the healthfood store. I blended that with frozen fruits ( bananas, papaya, berries etc.) and added a little orange juice and vanilla soy milk. I also like to add a tsp or two of flax seed oil (for omega 3's). My favorite smoothie was one I put a frozen banana, tbs. or so of peanut butter, vanilla soy milk, and the whey powder. Yummy!

    I've just done the Ensures.

My doc said she had patients in the past turn the vanilla Ensures into peach milkshakes and such with ice cream, etc. It is hard to get used to that vitamin-y taste, I know.

I also use the whey protein (Designer Whey) in vanilla. One of my favorite recipes is an orange julius - simply a banana, orange juice, and ice. I also like to make a fruit smoothie with vanilla yogurt, frozen strawberries, frozen blueberries, a little sugar, and a touch of milk. This site has a lot of other recipes, but I haven't tried most of them:

I loved making smoothies! I did 1/2 frozen banana, 1 cup frozen fruit, 1/4 cup OJ, 1 cup plain yogurt. You can add protein powder too.

Might also check for Bolthouse Farms smoothies - I find them in grocery stores in with the OJ. I really like the Protein one that's Mocha Cappucino (though it's caffeinated). Also Naked juices...along the same lines, though both can be pricey.

    HTH!

I figured out anopther way to get protein into my fruit smoothies. I couldn't find a powder I could choke down, so I use cottage cheese instead. Stay with me now, it's not nearly as icky as it sounds. I don't even like cottage cheese that much plain, but it's perfect in a smoothie. 1/2 c. has about 15 grams of protein.

(I use my magic bullet mixer)

Blend about 1/2 c. of juice w/ 1/2 or 3/4 c. of cottage cheese until it's smooth (a minute or two)
Add some frozen fruit (1/2 cup or so) and a touch more juice
    Blend until smooth!

    My two favorite combos are:
pineapple juice w/ frozen pineapple and frozen strawberries
orange juice w/ frozen mixed berries (raspberries, blueberries and black berries)

You could also add a few spoon fulls of yogurt

I use a whey protein called american whey. I get it online and they have many flavors. It does'nt have that after taste like some protein powders. One scoop is 20g of protein. I usually blend it with a banana some soy milk maybe some OJ and whatever berries I have or want to use. I even got my MIL hooked on this powder and she's pretty picky.
