M&N's 1st birthday is this Sat. We're having a small family party. We got a smash cake for ds1 and he ended up wearing 90% of it. It was EVERYWHERE. I'm thinking of making cupcakes for the babies and putting their candles on those. What did you do?

We did the small cakes. IMO that is all part of the 1st birthday.

Since you're asking, got them smash cakes which they thoroughly enjoyed and made a mess with. They loved them, and so did I.

I did cupcakes (for everyone) - they still had great fun and made a good mess, but less than a regular cake.

Is a smash cake just a small cake you expect them to smash??? I've never heard it called that before.

Yes, that's it exactly. The smash cake I got from the bakery for Aidan was a 5" round, I think. It came free with his b-day sheet cake.

I still have 5 months to think about it... but it will probably be small so I'll probably just make a cake and give them a piece. I know, boring!

Still have a long while to change my mind, but I had planned on making the cake(s) myself. I have tons of mini cake pans of all different sizes and shapes including some with a hollowed out center that can be filled with anything (ice cream, pudding, fruit, frosting, you name it.) They are small enough the boys can each have their own to make a gigantic mess with, and can be decorated individually. I also liked the flexability of making different kinds of cakes with different frostings/fillings so there is a little bit of everything. Decorating is really the only hard part. I will probably spend a little time and do something fun for the boys, but for the rest I will probably just slather on frosting or drizzle them with something.

Our party is next weekend and I plan on making two #1 cakes. I figure they are only one once-so let's go all out! I can totally see my boys attacking the cake-I think it's going to be great! And-I am doing chocolate too! I can't wait!!!

I will be sure too post pictures next weekend!

The girls each had their own cake for their birthday. I decorated them with cheerios so they mostly picked off the cheerios and ate that, but I think they actually ate some cake too. It was very cute for pictures and DH took care of cleaning them up so I didn't have to deal with it!

I'm planning on doing either really small cakes or giant cupcakes. (A bakery here makes huge cupcakes that are really cute.) It will honestly come down to cost.

I ordered the actual cake from Wal-mart and for purchasing a first birthday cake they offer you the little "smash" cake for free and once I explained I had twins, they gave me two "smash" cakes for free.

I'm planning on doing cupcakes. I fugre that will make enough of a mess :) Plus for the girls at least, I'm using organic and "healthier" ingredients- I'm a bit crazy :)

The girls had two 1st birthday parties: one on their birthday with just a few of us and one that next weekend with everybody. On their actual birthday, I made them some frosted cupcakes. For the big party, they had 8" cakes.

I made Dax a double-layer frosted 8" cake for his 1st birthday and he loved it as well. People want to see the baby smash the cake.:D

We did cupcakes (for everyone) and the boys made just as much mess, but didn't eat more than a cupcake worth of sugar/chocolate. It was the first time for them to have sugar and I didn't want them to go into shock. ;)

They were so cute I have to show them off!
