The grocery stores down here usually offer one for free if you purchase a larger 1st birthday cake. It's just a small cake that they can dig into!

We actually did cupcakes, but if I was doing a big cake, I'd rather just give each of them a piece with a candle in it. No baby is going to eat an entire smash cake (even though they're small), and then you just have a pile of smashed cake -- it's a waste.

I am planning to do just cupcakes for their 1st birthday "smash cake" and maybe a small cake for their 2nd birthday. It may be fun to use cookie cutters to cut out the number of their birthday (#1). You could do that with brownies, cookies or cake. It will be something to dig into but not as much to waste.

It's just the cake that the babies get to eat -- or, to smash, rather!

I'm doing cupcakes for everyone, so each of them will just get one of those. If you're ordering your cake from a bakery, ask them if they'll do small cakes for each of the babies....

We did cupcakes here, and they definitely did smash them up.

We just gave ours a piece of the cake and let them smash it, eat it, whatever with it.

I just gave them a piece of the real cake. :pardon: They were happy with it & I got my photos of them covered in cake.

With my son I got a little 4 inch cake (I am guessing this is a "smash cake") It was way more that he would have ever needed, but was it ever hilarious to watch him eat what he did of it. He was reaching down to his high chair tray with his mouth to eat it, and when he ate a bunch off of one side DH went to turn it and my son got his hands up under it and pulled it into his chest. I laughed so hard I cried, so my plan is to do the same with the girls when they turn 1! If you are worried about being wasteful though I would go with cupcakes!

[SIZE=10pt]We're going to get small cakes for both Alexis & Peyton. I had them with both my older two...and they loved 'smashing' them. Of course they don't end up eating that much...but the pictures are great.

Your bakery may give them to you if you order another cake or you cake just make a couple at home ~ cupcakes work great too

    April :)
