I finally got my girls in for their 18 month check-up on Friday (SUCH a busy summer) and everything is going well except for their head growth. Audrée's has not changed since their last appointment (about 6 months ago) and Amélie has gone up by less than a 1 cm. As a result Audrée has fallen off the chart and Amélie is almost off. The doctor was worried but said he would wait until 2 to refer them which seems to me like a long time to wait.

Other than that they are healthy girls. At almost 19 months they are taller and weigh more than my son did at the age of 2 which is also why I find the lack of head growth a little alarming. Amélie is 28lbs and 80cm tall and Audrée is 27lbs and 81cm tall so they are not small anywhere else ;). On the contrary, Dannik, who is almost 4, is only 31lbs and 100cm tall so getting taller but still super skinny, lol!!!

Has anyone else experienced this? I am trying not to google anything as I don't want to worry but, I'm worried.

I don't have personal experience but just wanted to send you hugs. I am sure it is nothing but if you are really worried then talk to the doc. Remember that those measurements are not always accurate, babes wiggle and move and if a different person does the measurement it can affect the results. If it makes you feel better Noah's big head only changed by 0.5 cm and Sophie by 1 cm (that's from their 15 month appt). Here are their stats:
    Noah 28 lbs 14 oz & 88.2 cm tall
    Sophie 25 lbs 10 oz & 84 cm tall

My kids are giants, I know :) The bottom line your kids sound like their doing well and there are no delays or red flags, so try not to worry :) Keep us updated !!

ITA with the PP; these measurements are very inaccurate. I've seen 2 different nurses get 2 different head size measurements on Jack that were 1/4" apart! And this was when he was about 6 months old, so this is a HUGE difference!

I don't have any personal experience with my children having small heads, but I personally have a very small head (and so does my mother, it must run in our family). There's nothing wrong with us physically or mentally, we just have small heads!

I know you know this already, but DON'T GOOGLE!! If you're really concerned, then I'd ask to get them re-measured in 2 months or so. I know the ped won't refer until 2, but this might ease your mind.

Small heads can be hereditary. I would ask to come back in three months for a re-measure - hopefully by the same person who took your last measurement.

My kids do have small heads as my husband does as well. It was more the lack of growth that he was concerned with. He said that the most important measurement for kids at this age is head circumference and that it is a cause for concern if head growth stops before brain growth does.

I think I'm going to bring them back in 3 months for a re-check. This was the same doctor that we saw for their 12 month check-up so hopefully we will see him again next time to get consistency in the measurements.

My DD had a check-up when she was under a year, and they were concerned bc of her small head (can't remember where she was on the charts, but it was low for sure), so referred me to a specialist, I walked in to see the specialist and she took one look at dd, spent about 10 seconds with her, and said she was fine, no problems. She said that DD was acting normal for her age (cooing, smiling, using her hands etc), so that her small head was probably just hereditary. And, I guess I also have a smallish head, so she probably got it from her.

So, in the end, it caused us a few weeks of stress worrying about stuff, and it turned out to be nothing. She is now 3.5yrs old and completely normally, just as quick and smart as her brother, just with a slightly smaller head!
