Hi, my twins are 3 years old but I just had a big beautiful singleton and I have a question about his sleep habits so I thought I'd come here. Steven (12 days old) sleeps at least 22-23 hours a day. He wakes up every couple of hours to breastfeed and he eats very well, and then he falls back asleep until the next feeding. He is occasionally awake enough to look around and he is moving well when he is awake, trying to lift his head and flinging his arms at toys that I put next to him. But, I just don't remember my twins sleeping nearly this much when they were newborns.

I've taken him to the pediatrician twice so far and he's been declared completely healthy (thank goodness!). He is also gaining weight quite well (and he was already 8 lbs. 14 oz. at birth). One thing I can say is that he's a breeze to take care of. Even his brothers' shenanigans don't wake him up.

Has anyone else had a baby that slept this much as a newborn? When did they finally snap out of it? Thanks for your input.

One of my twins did this. She went into a deep sleep almost imediately after birth. It lasted 3 weeks for her. She would wake up to eat (if we let her go to long) but would not wake up for dirty diapers or anything else. I kept to a pretty strict 3 hour feeding schedule so most of the time she wouldn't even have to wake up to eat. I'd just put a bottle in her mouth and she'd start sucking. the one drawback for us was it really affected her ability to BF. She couldn't stay awake long enough to catch on, or for me to work with her latching skills. We ended up having to use a nipple shield for BFing until we stopped completely at 4 months.....

But, after 3 weeks she seemed to wake up and was more alert and interactive. She can put herself to sleep really well now too, don't know if that's a result of her 3 week coma or what.....

Emma was like that. She just slept and slept for a month. She was a really easy baby to care for and actually is a very good toddler. I think it may just be a growth spurt on his part but maybe you'll have an easy baby too!

My DD#3 was the same way. She slept, ate, slept more and hardly ever cried. I was so pleased with her sleeping 7 hours at 3-4 weeks. Not to cause you any worry, but for me it didn't last. At about 3 months she began to wake every 3 hours (at night too) to be feed.
Enjoy your sleeping baby! I hope he continues to be a great sleeper for you.

My second child was like that!!! She was the easiest baby - she literally slept and ate. Enjoy it while you can! Now, she keeps up with her older sister but they are both great sleepers.

my boys were all like that until like 2 or 3 months - that's what I expected of newborns when I had the twins but they had other ideas!! they rarely slept and they still don't!! I used to have to try and wake them up to let someone see the boy's eyes - with these girls everyone has seen them since the minute of their birth - w/ the girls If I am lucky enough to have even one napping I have canceled big plans to let them sleep!!

I could have posted your same exact post when my son was born. He slept and ate and that was it, but I can't remember when he started to be awake more. It was so weird since with the girls I remember being so much busier. Now I can't keep my son still long enough and he's getting into more trouble than both my girls put together. Thankfully he is a good sleeper at night.

Enjoy his sleeping now and I hope as he gets older he keeps on sleeping great for you.

My girls slept a ton in the beginning. Did you have a C-section and are you on pain meds? I suspected that part of it was that the drugs in my system made them sleepy, so I got off of them pretty soon. They are still huge sleepyheads. If you have checked with your pedi, I wouldn't worry about it! Enjoy the peace!

My kids were like that for the first month, although in reality they slept through the first three months of their life. I thought that they were NEVER going to wake up. So it sounds normal to me, seeing as how that was how things were for us.

Thank you for the replies!! You've all made me feel so much better. For the record, I was taking percoset for c-section pain and after I posted this, it occurred to me that the narcotic was to blame for my sleepy boy. I finished the meds by the end of the first week and he has become a bit more alert in the last couple of days. He's still very easygoing so I have no complaints.
