We've never used a blanket in their cribs - but, now that it's going to be getting colder - I was wondering when it's finally safe to let a baby have a blanket in their crib?

Also, we still use a crib bumper.... what are your opinions on these?

Thanks ladies - you're the best!

my boys are both using a light blanket. ( they wear footed fleece sleepers). The bumper pad should come out as soon as your baby is standing up in crib. Otherwise, they could use it to climb up & out of the crib! I took our bumpers out when the boys started rolling & ending up at the bottom of the crib. Good luck to you!

Mine are almost 2 and we will not be doing blankets until they get into their own toddler beds. I just dress them appropriately at night. Sleepers with feet, etc... I dont feel comfortable yet at all with a blanket. Plus, they move around too much anyway to keep a blanket on. They STILL have their crib bumpers in (they use them as pillows and foot props) and they have woobies in there too, just no blankets.

I use swaddle me blankets, they have velcro and I velcro them under the arms. They cannot get out of them, I just moved up to size large, they go up to 22 pounds. I have a mesh bumper in their cribs, I'm not sure when I will take them out, but I put them in because Thaddeus' leg got stuck in the rails...ouch! I don't want that to happen again.

I am bit paranoid about the blanket. I bought Halo Sleepsacks instead. Like a blanket, only it moves with them wherever they wiggle or crawl off to. They sleep in footed pj's & the sleep sack.

As for bumpers we have 1 with and 1 without. One baby kept trying to use it as a stepping stone to get out of the crib so his came out. The other uses his as a pillow/foot prop so I have left it in for his comfort. :)

I use halo sleepsacks... Mostly because they move so much in the crib that they would end up with the blanket on their face. I'll probably switch to regular blanket next year... wean them off the sleep sacks during the summer and move to blankets in the fall... I use breathable bumpers though... They love sleeping with their face against it so I couldn't risk regular ones... plus air circulation is better with those (and it's important to prevent SIDS afaik). They fall down if they put their feet on them though so I'm not worried about them climbing on them. I know the same company makes breathable blankets too.

about 6 months we started using blankets - it was more for security than warmth and they were crocheted blankets with large holes...

as for bumpers I just took the bumpers out over the summer to wash them and never put them back in - at 2.5 my kids are VERY happy in their cribs and do not try to climb out!

We use the sleep sacks, but we got those to help us transition from miracle blankets. I let each of them hold a light blanket b/c they rub them on their chins and cheeks as they are falling asleep. I check on them and they are always okay. Once they are out of the newborn stage it is really much safer.
