My son has just started flipping to his belly to sleep. I am so nervous and freaked out. Is there any kind of positioner safe for an almost 6mnth old to keep them on their back? I keep flipping him over but he flips right back!

My doctor has always told me that if they are strong enough to flip themselves on to their bellies, it's okay to leave them that way to sleep. There's really no way to keep flipping them back over all night long without interrupting your sleep & theirs.

My boys have been sleeping on their bellies since 9 weeks and it has been wonderful! They started to STTN then and I never looked back! If he is sleeping well, then go for it!!

the only way my son would sleep was on his belly...so I let him once he could roll (around 4 mos or so)...

That is exactly what our pedi told us. :good:

I remember when they first learned how to roll over, and I was a nervous wreck those first few nights. But all was well, and we made it through. Momma!

If he can roll he is fine. Nathaniel started sleeping on his tummy at 3 weeks, and that is when he started STTN. William is still on his side, he isnt strong enough with his head yet.

my boys' constantly flip over the their bellies and i find them all curled up with their butt up in the air every morning with their sleep positioner upside down and on the other side of the crib...i'm not too worried about it.

I agree, as long as they are flipping themselves over, they should be alright to sleep on their bellies!

Our boys have slept on their tummies since coming home from the NICU. For the first few months we used an Angelcare monitor to give us peace of mind. After that they had so much head control we really didn't worry about it. In fact, right now we have the opposite problem. In the past week they have started flipping over from their tummy to their back in the middle of the night, and then they can't get back over to their tummy (yet) so they fuss and we have to go in there and either rock them for a few minutes or just roll them back over to their tummy and pat their butts for a minute or so until they fall back asleep. They sleep a LOT better on their tummies.

We are just going thru this with Zachary - and I'm remembering that 'fear' I felt when my other kids did this. I was told the same - if they can get there regularly on their own they are fine - but its stll nervewracking!!!

Our 3 youngest ones never slept on their backs - I know that's terrible, but none of them would, except for the twins while they were in the NICU....if they can flip, let them.

Yep, I agree with all of the PP's! If they can do it themselves then there's basically nothing you can do about it. You may even find that your LO's will sleep better on their bellies! I worried constantly about my girls when they first learned to do it, but not anymore, we all get a good night's rest!

HI Guys thanks for all the responses! Kids have their first cold this week so its been a pretty crazy week between me getting up to make sure Johnny is breathing on his belly and in between hearing little Ava choke on her coughs, I havent been sleeping much! Thanks all for making me feel better about the sleeping on the tummy thing though. I am slowly becoming ok with it!
