my babies are 8wks old tomorrow and my ds really likes the swing, so during the daytime for naps we often put him in there. But, I have been reading a bunch of books about "sleep" and they all pretty much say to stop doing this around 8wks (mind you this is usually referring to a singleton baby), lately if he falls asleep in the swing we have tried to turn it off after about 30min, but he always wakes up, should I just ignore the books and let him sleep in his swing while it is going for a few more weeks?

When did you stop letting them "swing through naps"?

For us, it was much later than 8 weeks! We transitioned them pretty quickly to sleeping in their cribs at night, but naps were really up in the air for us. I think we stopped having them nap in their swings around 4 months. Don't go crazy ... at this stage of the game, you really just want to get them to sleep, anywhere, anyhow. There were many times I took them out and drove around just to get them to sleep.

Take your time ... don't worry, they can't stay in those swings forever, so eventually they will have to stop!!

We went cold turkey from the swings at 4 mnths. I packed them away. But before that that is the only place they slept because of the reflux and the swing was just so soothing. I even hauled both swings around with me TWICE when we went out of town! I could not have survived twinfants without letting them sleep in their swings. They now sleep all night and two 2 hour naps a day in their cribs!!

BTW it helped transition to the crib when we put them together, swaddled, on a propped up mattress.

We really made a concerted effort at around 4 mos. to put them to sleep in their cribs at naptime. It went well, but they were still swaddled for sleep at that point and that really helped.

We stopped around 3 months for nighttime and 4 months for naps. They actually stopped falling asleep in the swing around that age, so it wasn't as hard to break the habit as I had expected. They have slept fine in their cribs since then, and I wound up wishing I hadn't stressed about it as much as I did.

We stpped at night around 3 months but they still take naps in them. When we move we will tranition them to the cribs (6 months old then)

you can't spoil them that early

Mine were way older than 8 weeks. We just went cold turkey into the crib and it worked probably at about 4 months. Sometimes when they would nap in their crib and wake up too early and I didnt want them to cry and wake the other one I would bring them out into the family room and put them back in the swing and let them take the rest of their nap in it. So, it works both ways :)

You're supposed to stop that around eight weeks?? Eek...my girls are sleeping in their swings right now! I figure at this point I let them sleep wherever they want. They do sleep only in their cribs at night though.
