My LOs are nealry 13 months old. DD can survive 5+hours awake and she usually has 2 naps a day: morning and afternoon. However, DS still needs 3! His routine is this:

    8-8.30am - breakfast
    10am-12pm - nap
    12-12.30pm - lunch
    2-4pm nap
    4-4.30pm - fruit puree
    6-7pm nap
    8-8.30pm dinner
    9pm bed

DD has the same routine but sleeps either one nap of 1 hour then a nap of 2, or 1.5 hours twice. Both babies usually sleep between 10-11 hours a night.

DS just cant cope with being awake for more than 2 hours at a time! I have to point out that he is active from the moment he wakes up to when he asks to go to bed. He isnt walking yet but does everything else. Last week he skipped his 6pm nap and was awake for 4 hours (he resisted the last nap that day). He had a big meltdown and didnt finish his dinner and tried to refuse his daily bath.

Is this amount of sleep normal!? I know each LO is different and, at this age, they "need" 14-15 hours a day. I just wondered if anyone else has LOs who need to sleep a lot? I was hoping to reduce his naps as he is going to nursery in Sept and wont be able to sleep so much!

    TIA!

Hmmm...mine were still taking 2 naps a day at 13 months old. Their naps at that time would total between 3-4 hours. I waited until they were ready to drop a nap when I would drop one. It sounds like your little guy feels he needs the rest. I am not sure if this would help you or not but I would give him another month with three naps and watch his pattern, as he gets older he might start want to drop a nap. Good luck!

I think "normal" is whatever works for you and your family! We have an earlier bedtime... so during your 6-7 nap we give dinner and baths and then off to bed by 7:30p. But our other naps are pretty similar to yours. Sleep is never a bad thing in my book

My kids were always slow to drop naps. We just really got down to one nap about 6 weeks ago. However, my kids haven't taken a nap longer than one hour in a very long time (even now that they are on one nap). I think they were still napping three times at 14 months but those naps weren't 2 hours long either. However, my boys sleep 12-13 hours at night. If you want to drop one of his naps, maybe you could try an earlier bedtime to help him regain some of the sleep that he needs without having to have another nap? Good luck!

that was going to be my suggestion as well, only because, as you said in your post he'll be going to nursery in the fall & won't be able to nap as much. otherwise i would say just go with the flow if you can. GL!

When my girls were napping 3x a day, they weren't sleeping for 2 hours either. I wish they would have. We are on 2 naps right now and some days they'll nap for an hour and sometimes longer. It depends. They usually sleep 7-7. I would also try an earlier bedtime to see if you can drop that last nap, if that's what you want to do. I don't think there is anything wrong with 3 naps if it works for you, but if you want to drop it, I'd try the earlier bedtime.

Thanks for your feedback, girls. DS didnt want the last nap today and he coped fine. That´s the nap I´d like him to drop but I go with the flow there. I "cant" really do an earlier bedtime as I live in Spain where the kids go to bed really late. I see babies out and about here at 11pm! Also, it´s still daylight here at 10pm! Everyone comments on how "early" mine go to bed but I do what works for my LOs. They´re normally asleep by 9.30pm. My parents are going to think it´s really late when we visit them in the UK this summer! Just aswell its an hour less over there! Eeek!
