    Hi,

Lately I have been having trouble sleeping-either can't get to sleep or I will wake when I need to use bathroom and then not be able to get back to sleep. I had sleep issues the 1st trimester- in fact, I took hour long naps most days.
I have tried everything and am getting really frustrated. I get side effects from Unisom and Benadryl so am avoiding those. I asked my doctor about Ambien- which has helped me in the past- and he just said he doesn't know much about it and didn't really answer on whether it is safe or not.
Has anyone taken Ambien during pregnancy or heard whether it is ok?

it is not safe... I have major sleep issues so I know how you feel... try reading when you can't sleep.

    from ambien website:
If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, inform your doctor immediately. Sleep medicines may cause sedation of the unborn baby when used during the last weeks of pregnancy. Ambien is not recommended for use by nursing mothers.

The sleep issues are only going to get worse as you progress :)

When I was 14 weeks I woke up every 2-3 hours to pee. Now I'm waking every hour, sometimes I'll go 2 hours. I also can't get comfortable AT ALL. I think it is nature's way of preparing us for when the babies arrive!

Ambien is not safe to take while pregnant. Also, IMO it is not safe for anyone to take ever. You know how they say on the commercial that some people "wake up" and go somewhere after taking it? Yes, that happens a LOT. My friend would get up and walk to the store and she also once took MORE. She does not remember any of it because she had taken the ambien. I think it is dangerous.

Ambien is Class B in pregnancy . Class B means: Presumed safe, based on animal studies; no well-controlled human studies are available.

Most drugs that are prescribed in pregnancy are in this category including Benadryl, Terbutaline, Zofran and even Tylenol.

My doctor gave me a prescription for it, and I do take it very infrequently (only when I haven't slept in a few days and I just can't get any rest). I think you have to weigh the risks and benefits of anything you take during pregnancy and talk it over with your doctor. Just my opinion.

I just end up taking Benadryl on most nights where I know it is going to be a problem. I try NOT to nap during the day to help so I can sleep more at night.

I've suffered from insomnia since I was a pre-teen. It's always been an issue for me - and I KNOW how much it SUCKS!

some of the things I do is get up out of bed and go watch something for 15-30 minutes and then come back to bed. Sometimes it helps me reset and start over again. Otherwise I am tossing and turning.

Try taking half the amount of Benadryl you would normally take - sometimes that will make enough of a difference.

while i was on bedrest in the hospital while i was pregnant, they offered me ambien, even without me requesting anything to help me sleep! by the third night of no sleep, i understood why! I took it for a few nights until i became accustomed to the new atmosphere. they usually gave me a half of a pill. I am assuming that they knew waht they were doing in offereing it to me. It was a Womens and Babies hospital....

Thanks so much for the comments.
I don't feel so bad taking it if it's a class B. Plus if they gave it to you whil in the hospital, MommyCandi- you're right, I would think they know what they are doing there.
When I had taken it in the past, 1/2 pill worked great and it's the only thing that really helped. I am looking forward to a good night of sleep and maybe then I can get back on track.

Hope you get some sleep soon!
My insomnia is spilling over to DH. The only time either of us gets a good night's sleep is when we are in separate beds. :(
