My four month old boys are sleeping terribly at night! They used to wake once per night to eat usually around 2-3am and then settle down and go back to sleep till around 5am. Their bedtime is around 7pm. Now, the past week it's been up and down all night and they won't settle back down after eating. Last night, this is what it looked like-
7:30pm- bed, 10:30- L wakes up crying, put pacifier in and back to sleep, 12:30am- L up to eat and back to sleep, 2:30am- A up to eat, 4:00am- L up to eat and A not going back to sleep. Put A in bed with us and he goes back to sleep. 6:00am- L up to eat. 7:00am- A up to eat and then both up for the day.

Is there something wrong or do you think this is normal and we were just lucky? I am at a loss and DH and I are exhausted. Also, our three year old is waking up and coming in our room at all hours of the night.

Do you think they might be coming down with something? My babies at that age just started STN except when they weren't feeling well. We also have a 3-year-old. We made the mistake of letting him sleep with us a couple times when he woke up, so then he kept coming in our room several times during the night expecting us to let him sleep with us. We had to be very diligent about putting him back in his own bed and not letting him sleep with us any more. Not even once. Eventually he stopped coming in our room at night.

Sorry your nights are rough right now. Hang in there!

Maybe they are coming down with something. They act ok during the day. I have been sick since last Wednesday with a sore throat and had a fever yesterday so it's possible they could be getting sick- I hope not.

Do you have a white noise machine for your 3 year old? We put one in our DD's room and that made all the difference for her.

At 4 months, mine were getting up at least twice a night, more like 3 times a night. But I dont know if that is normal or not. I would probably wake them both at the 12:30 waking and feed each of them and see if they hungry at that time. That might stop one of the wakings.

Is this recent, like a growth spurt possibly? Otherwise, I would say it sounds like that 4-7 mos age where all the development happens and things get insane. I hate to say this but I just started having both STTN at a little before 10 mos. We have averaged 1-3 night feedings until 7 mos when it dropped to 1 consistently. Around your ages I started early on just feeding and laying down (I didn't burp in middle of night) and although at first they would cry for a couple long mins, they soon went to sleep easily in the middle of the night. It is stil no picnic, and although many people say theirs STTN starting at an early age (and I do believe them...lucky!), that is not the norm. Hang in there...hopefully it will change before you know it. Maybe work on the self-soothing but they are young enough to want to wake and eat if they are burning a lot during the day. HUGS!

My DS started waking more when he started getting teeth. It is possible to start getting them as early as 4 months and they can feel pain long before the teeth are actually poking through. Are they chewing a lot during the day? You might try a dose of tylenol before bed to see if it helps.
