Three nights ago I purchased a snoogle body pillow. I employed drastic measures since sleeping with standard pillows wasnt doing it for me anymore.

Well, I literally fought with this snoogle the whole night!! I should of known this would be the result, as I turn around often during the night, especially since my hips have started hurting!

Well, the following day dh took the snoogle back to the shop. Then a day later we got a wedge pillow, dh was certain this would help.. (yeah right)..I awoke the next morning with worse pain in the hips then ever!!

This weekend we got two queen size pillows...I tried laying on them, but they were far too high to be comfortable...

I think I have exhausted my options to be anywhere near comfy at night!!

If I were shorter (I'm 5 ft 8) I could maybe lay in our recliner, although it doesnt have an option to keep it in a recline position.. :(

I've noticed that my tummy is much heavier than before, and this can be the cause of my hips being so sore at night..I usually place a pillow under my tummy when I go sleep..but this doesnt seem to be doing the trick anymore either as I wake up with a sore tummy..feels like my tummy muscles have been stretched to the limits..

Please, please let me know of any other ways to get comfy!! :umm:

    I'm deperate...

    THANKS!!

I'm right there with ya, unfortunately....the only way I can sleep is semi-reclined on the couch, propped up with lots of pillows (or my J-pillow folded in half) behind me. I gave up sleeping horizontally on the bed many weeks ago....

Even if I turn on my side, I'm still semi-sitting. There's no way I can be flat on my side for more than 30 minutes, because of the exact hip pain you're mentioning. And, I get zero sleep if I'm tossing and turning because of my hips....

So, I'm mostly reclined on my back (OB said it was fine). The couch cushions have a lot of give, and sort of compress under my butt to keep me (relatively) comfortable.

    Hope that helps!

I feel your pain! I just found a comfortable position and slept through the night TWICE in a row...yes, just shy of a miracle and not including trips to the bathroom :). I lie on my left side, put a small flat throw pillow between my knees, prop up 2 pillows for my head & hold a 3rd pillow in my arms. GOOD LUCK!

My hips have been horrible at night, it has gotten to the point where I have to put mineral ice on them before I go to bed, this does help me get some sleep, it might be worth a try.

    My magic bullets:

    1) Memory foam mattress topper from Costco
    2) Full length body pillow tucked under my belly and between my knees
    3) A queen sized pillow tucked behind my back
    4) Percocet (okay, it is a pain narcotic prescribed by my doctor for my irritable uterus, but man, it did the trick in taking the hip pain away)

Okay, while I realize option 4 is probably not available to most (nor should it be I suppose), the other three sort of helped. And I know this is no consolation to you now, but it will be in a bit...I think that our sleeplessness is the biological way of preparing our bodies for the sleepless nights when our babies are born. I truly believe that. I have to be honest; I got MORE sleep when the babies arrived, than in the two months prior to their delivery. No joke. So just think, this is great practice for in the next few months!!!

    Thanks to all the advice!

The body pillow is out as it makes turning difficult..

Otherwise I guess I just have to be inventive...

Don't discount the body pillow! It is awesome. My pubic bone started separating about 7 weeks ago and I sleep well most nights using my body pillow. I leave it in the center of the bed and throw my belly and one leg over it. On the other side I just have another pillow to throw my leg over. That way I don't have to bring the pillow with me and I can still roll over. It's hard enough rolling over when your hips are killingyou.....you shouldn't have to bring something with you. I would seriously look into just flanking yourself with pillows so you have one whichever side you're sleeping on!

Ok I know what you mean about rolling over with the body pillow and I almost stopped using it. This is what I do and I have to admit, I sleep pretty good, and I am almost 33 weeks and my belly is huge. I got a snoozer pillow its shaped like a big long J. I don't know if that's the same thing you got. I also have a regular long body pillow. I sleep with the long side of the snoozer along my right side tucked under my back with the curve up by my head with a regular pillow under the curved part then I have the body pillow on my left side ( the body pillow is a lot less firm than the snoozer so it fits well under my belly). This way I'm not really sleeping on one side or the other, it almost feels like I'm laying on my back because the snoozer is there if I want to lean back but if I want to flip back and forth I can because I have full length support on either side. Plus my head is slightly propped up to keep the heartburn away. One other thing and I know this is going to sound really dumb but I also eat a big piece of cheese before I go to sleep, the calcium helps you sleep and the protien helps sustain you through the night. I hope this makes sense, it took me a lot of sleepless nights to figure it out. It took a while but I finally got it down to a science.

I have to second the memory foam mattress topper -- this worked great for me in my first pregnancy, and I slept comfortably on it almost toward the end (except I wanted to kill my snoring DH).

This time, though, it's not preventing my hips from hurting, for some reason.....you know, maybe I need a new one! Hmmm....

I have the Snoogle and I hated it at first - I almost thought about returning mine but now, I can't live without it. Turning from side to side is hard but I don't bring the pillow with me. When I'm on my left side, the long side of the pillow is behind my back and the J part comes up between my legs and I tuck just a small portion under my tummy. When I'm on my right side, the long side of the pillow is in front of me and the J part tucks between my legs and around my butt - I find this the most comfortable but feel guilty because I'm squishing Baby B and he is the smaller of the 2!

Turning in general is hard because my belly is so big... the pillow for me is definitely not to blame. I have alot of hip pain myself and roll over several times during the night - and get up about 8 times to pee. The Snoogle also helps for when you don't want to lay directly on your side but almost half on your side and half on your back - my OB recommends this position.

I hope you find something that works for you. I know you probably hated the Snoogle but it's an acquired liking that comes with time.

    Good luck!

I actually kept a few pillows behind me and a few pillows in front of me. i found that having a pillow at my back kept me from falling backward and accidentally laying on my back..and thereby waking up b/c of having breathing issues. So I would alternate between laying totally on my side with my top leg bent and on top of a pillow, my belly on a pillow and a halfway position where my back was more supported by 2-3 flat pillows. it kept me from doing too much work to stay on my side. I found that the flat pillows worked better b/c I could layer them and get just the right height. Plus with 2-3 in front of me and 2-3 behind me all I had to do was flip over without dragging pillows with me... and there were still the same number of pillows available. Poor dh was down to about 2ft of space left on our bed... but at this point I was kind of glad to have a little space between us....less likely he'd start reaching for me in the middle of the night. :umm:

Denise, if you haven't already I would definitely try the pillow between your knees, in addition to under your belly.

Becca, can you rotate the topper? That seems to help me sleep better!

    Thanks for the advice ladies!

Had some what success last night. I removed all the pillows I was SLEEPING ON, and only had two soft pillows on either side of me plus one between my legs. I think I slept well partly because I was so TIRED & also had a firmer surface. I can't be guarenteed that this is going to work tonight, but will try it & see what transpires..

What I know for sure now is that dh & I will have to purchase a much BIGGER bed once the little angels arrive!! I'm sure they'll want to lie in with us sometimes & right now that will be an impossiblity!

Interesting how you see things through different eyes once you become pregnant..
And how certain things you never had a problem with now become a major obsticle! :p

I'm sure I'll laugh at this one day...

I feel your pain. It seems like every time I hit a growth spurt, I have to re-do how I use pillows to sleep. The wedge pillow was no help to me either and I never even tried a snoogle because I get up so often to readjust and use the restroom.

I use one of those squish pillows under my stomach and it really helps. You can also buy the small travel size pillows at Wal-Mart and they can be good to use under your stomach. I use my travel size between my knees. I use a regular size pillow behind my back. I can sleep for maybe 2 hours at a time then have to get up, use the restroom, and readjust. I can't wait to sleep on my stomach again!

When my hips began to hurt I had to put a pillow between my knees at night. Not a super fluffy on, one that was used a bit. Flatter. It helped a bit.
