skipping 3T...what the heck?

My girls clothing sizes have been right at, or below, their age. So they were 15 months old wearing 12 month clothing. 24 months old, wearing 18 months, and some 24 months, etc.

Late winter I noticed some of their 2T shirts getting too short in the torso and arms so we went with 3T. For the summer I bought all 3T stuff. But I'm finding that a lot of it is snug!! Their Carter's jammies are big, 3T dresses are big, but shorts and tees have been so snug. I feel like all of a sudden my girls are HUGE. I'm slightly intimidated by those of you with "smaller" girls. I feel like mine are tanks. Is this normal?!?!?! Has this happened to anyone else where it seems that they are pretty much going to skip a size?

I don't have girls, but, yes, it did happen with me. And, well, at around that age they just stopped growing OUT and started growing UP. For instance, they just wore out a pair of 4T surf trunks (they are almost 8) that have fit them for the past 3 summers! I wouldn't go crazy buying the next size up just yet (unless the length is the problem). Chances are good that they are just "bulking up" for a big vertical growth spurt.

I have found some brands seem small. Like 3T in Target stuff ran small, The Children's Place does a bit too. I think we kind of skipped that or they were in it early. I feel like their torsos got long, if that makes sense. Shirts didn't quite cover their bellies. They are outgrowing the little girls section of TCP, and I am buying size 5 for shirts at Target! I don't think my girls are huge, but they are a bit bigger/taller than some other kids their age.

I was going to post abut this tonight! Hannah can hardly fit in to any 3T pants now, and some 3T shirts are too small. She wore her almost 5 yr old big sister's 4T pants today. She is good in 3T dresses, haven't worn shorts much yet but I'm thinking she will need mostly 4Ts, especially by late summer. She has been off the charts in height her last two checkups, but it still seemed freaky today to pull clothes out of Rachel's closet for her to wear!!

If it makes you feel any better, Karina is wearing a lot of Nadia's old 4T stuff -- and she's not even 2 yet! She is really tall, and very solid.

The saving grace is that our 3T stuff is mostly winter clothing, so I'm happy if she fits into the 4T summer stuff now, LOL.

Happened to us, too. I always buy a season ahead and all of the 3T shirts and shorts that I bought for this summer are snug :( ! I bought 4T swimsuits and they fit them well. Everything that I have bought them new has been 4T and it fits them. I can't believe they have skipped that size either!! It's amazing how fast they are growing!!

Actually, the sizing is all over the place. I took a tape measure with me to buy swim trunks because I have two 4T Carter's suits and one fits perfectly while the other is falling-off big. SO, I measured and the suit that fits is 18" in the waist. I measured suit after suit after suit at the store. The range was astonishing even within the same brand. At TCP, one particular suit was smaller in the waist in a 3T than in a 2T and then the 4T went back to the 2T measurement  All of them were too big for my skinny boys. The suit in that print that measured correctly was 18M but was too short in the rise. HOWEVER, he saw another print on the rack that he liked and what do you know, the 3T measured 19". Close enough.

My girls did that to 2T stuff. They'd been pretty close to true to age/size up until just a few months ago.

Blew right through 2T and we're now solidly in 3Ts. Thank goodness for adjustable waist pants!

I don't think my girls are that big either, but they are tall. :pardon:

mine grew really quickly at one time. They only spent 2 months in one size(18 mth for jessy and 2t for jazz) and then they were at 2t and 3t

I can't thank you all enough for chiming in, I was starting to question if I was doing something wrong with their diets because they are suddenly growing so fast.

I find sizing to be all over the place lately. They are pretty solidly in 3T's, but I had to buy some things in size 4T for Lily. A few bathing suits, a few dresses, and a few shirts. I have to try everything on them lately, I just never know what size they really need. I guess I won't buy too much ahead for next summer.

Ana is in 3t shirts. She got SO long all of a sudden and now the 2t's are just belly shirts for her. But her legs are still 24 month in some brands/2t in others. I've stopped looking at sizes and just hold them up to the girls to gauge if they'll fit. I just bought them some cute memorial day/4th of july outfits yesterday and ended up getting both 3t tops and 24 month bottoms even though Ana is a good 2" taller than Meara.

Sizing inconsistency across brands is one my biggest annoyances. I use the same brand for shoes so I can buy ahead during sales and know the next pair will actually fit on the day the shoes suddenly become too small.

About half of our summer shorts are size 12m, going on their third year of use! (length doesn't matter).

We are usually on size or one behind on the shirts, but the pants are all over the place. I love to buy pants with adjustable waists b/c I can get so much more use out of them. Children's Place & Gymboree have most of their pants (except sweats) with adjustable waists starting at size 2T.

I also love Land's End & Children's Place (no branded/silk screen crap) for their basic lines and sturdy quality. IMO, Children's Place pants were made with Wilt Chamberlin's kids as the models...maybe I'm just raising oompa loompas.

I don't know if this helps Michelle, but I have been buying Emma 3T bottoms, and 4T tops from Targe'. Shorts for boys are a different story. Jake can still fit into some 24 month from there.

Luke & Lila are mostly wearing 4T clothes too. They have some things that fit in a 3T or even still a 2 but mostly not. So, Lauren & Emma aren't that big. I remember with my other kids I almost always could double their age for clothing sizes when they were little, at 6 mos they wore a 12mo, at 1 they wore a size 2, and by 2 they were in a 4T.

My kids were in 2Ts for a short period of time I think it was from Jan to April. They both got into 3Ts quickly. While I noticed my daughter is getting into 4Ts w/skipping mostly 3Ts altogether for shirts/sweaters because they shrink after just a few wash. I hate hate hate 'Jumping Jacks from Kohls. They tend to run small right after 1-2-3 wash they shrink, fade, and look old. I have been buying 4Ts for shirt/sweaters because hse has thick arm/upper body. She still wears 3Ts for capri/skirt, jeans, pants, shorts, and dresses.

    Pajamas:
I buy a lot of plain shirt or t-shirt with cotton shorts as their pajamas for night time at Wal-mart. They run $3.50 compared to buying $10/15/20 dollars with Carter's, The Children's Store, and etc. I meant -- they only sleep in it, right? I used capri leggings on my daughter as 'pajamas' if their room feel cold from A/C from time to time. I find them for about clerance from last season when they were getting rid of them. Beside at breakfast time they always get stain from food with syrup, jelly, and etc.

We are all over---- usually 3T, but a lot of things are 4T for length (though we run into too wide being a problem).

I think we will be at 4T for just abit---size 4 or 4/5 girls runs narrower and longer so that is what I am stocking up on for Fall. 3T is a funny size for us too!

Mostly we do Kohls, TArget, and Childrens Place since they run narrow, are cheap, and easy to find.

Michelle--Ironically we have found the same thing with Carter's brand. For Clare (she is 29lbs, 36in tall)--she is taking 3T pants and 4T shirts. Anthony on the other hand, is still in 2T-3T Carters. The boys tend to run true to size, but girls are a little smaller. Also, the Carter's lady told me that the clothing is not pre-shrunk. We had to go out in the winter and buy more clothing for Clare because of this--and we do a lot of shopping at Carter's!

Ditto what Sarah said. I also think Gymboree runs a little big in the shorts.

Yep, Rachel is the same. I am buying her 4T stuff. Rebekah is smaller so her stuff is 3T, but that's only b/c she's smaller. I usually buy the bigger b/c of the shrinking and her belly hanging out. So, you are not alone. Of course the sizing differences with all the stores does make a difference. So, you are not alone!
