Size of Their Fists?

When the twin's were having breakfast this morning, I got to thinking about how it's said that a serving of regular food is about the size of their fist. Am I the only one who thinks that's bazaar? If I gave my kids a tiny meal of a mix of eggs & sausage the size of their fist, I think they would look at me like  & then the water works would begin. I know their tummies are small at this point, but I can't find to believe that that would fill them up remotely. Any thoughts? Is there actually anyone out there who swears by it?

I dont swear by it at all. I just go by their cues and if they want more, they get it.

I don't swear by it either, I just give them what they will eat. My kiddos are good at letting me know when they are done (they'll start feeding the floor).

Mine eat WAY more than the size of their fist and they are only 15 and 17 pounds at 14 months, so I don't think I'm over feeding them. They let me know when they don't want any more.

I've never heard of that. I feel them until they stop eating.

I have heard of that before, but I never go by that. I let them tell me when they want more or when they are full.

Sometimes they eat more sometimes they hardly eat. Once in awhile they even share with the dogs, not that I am ok with this. But they tell me I no hungry and Bobo or Addy is.

I think mine eat portions the size of their 2 fists and feet  I go by their cues too!

Yeah it's a bit crazy. It really depends what it is too. For example mine will split a toast with cheese, a veggie burger and a spoonful of veggies, knowing that 1/4 of it will end up on the floor... But if I open a frozen mac'n cheese, they'll split it and won't get anything else.

I absolutely don't go by their cues though. I've never seen mine refuse something they find yummy... ever. I think going by their cues might encourage them to overeat, depending on what they are eating.

Really? I've never heard of that for babies. My boys (14 months) eat more than that after they've eaten all the food I fixed for them.

Tonight together they ate one of the graduates meals (pasta stars and green beans), corn (size of a stage 2 veggie), sweet pototo and carrot mix (size of a stage 2 veggie) and 4oz mixed fruit. They were still eatng so they ate some goldfish and kix after that. Now this was a big meal for them, but it's not all that uncommon at dinner.

ETA: Just realized this was FY. At 11 months they were splitting a graduates dinner, a stage 2 veggie and a stage 2 fruit. I've always just fed them till they stop. It's obvious when they are done with something - they spit it back out at you.

I can usually tell when they are still are hungry. What they eat totals much more than the size of their fists but the portions we give of each item are not huge. They will usually split something like a grilled cheese, a small portion of veggies, and split a fruit cup (little orange slices are their fave!). If they are still acting hungry (whining and hitting their trays, lol) we'll give them goldfish or cheerios or more veggies if we cooked extra.
I don't let them overeat but I make sure they get enough too.
