I know I have seen this posted before so I apologize for the duplication. I am currently 20 weeks 3 days.

Baby A is measuring 80th percentile at 1lb, 1oz and about 21 weeks 5 days.
Baby B is measuring less than 10th percentile at 10 oz and around 19 weeks 5 days.
So they are about 2 weeks apart at this point. The doctor says that combined with my blood work we have a 1 in 40 chance the reason for the size difference is downs syndrome. Also B’s cord is marginal insertion, inserted close to the edge of the placenta, could be the other reason for the restricted growth and not downs syndrome. DH and I agree we do not want to do an amnio due to the risk. Both are boys, separate sacs and 2 placentas. Looking for feedback for those that have BTDT and have some good news.

    TIA!!

Are there any other markers for Downs?

Anyhow.. My twins (b/g) always measured 2-3 weeks apart. They were even born at 7 lbs and 5 lbs 11 oz.

Well.. with them being di/di.. it could be nothing more then genetics with fraternal twins. I know its really common for di/di twins to be very different in size and have nothing wrong with them. I will pray thats your case.

my thoughts too. My 1st dd and ds were singletons and were over a pound different. remember frats are totally different genetically and totally normal to be very different.

2 weeks before I delivered mine were measuring almost 3 weeks apart. They were born 1 1/4 pounds apart. The odds are it is just because they are frats.

    All the best!

Did you do the genetic testing to test for downs?? My twins are measuring about a week apart and the peri says this is most likely due to their genetic make up....one may be taller, bigger, etc....You are in my thoughts....wish i could be more help! I know they will be just perfect!!!

[SIZE=10pt] :hug99: I can only imagine how worried you are.

Mine were always a week or two off from each other. When they were born there was only a half pound difference...today about a three pound difference.

    My thoughts are with you

    April :)

I am sorry to hear that. I know exactly how you feel. I am in the same situation. I am in my 21 week and still don't know if I'm having fraternal or identical. Baby A is 1 lb and Baby B is oly 6 oz. they are about 3 weeks apart. My doctor is watching closly and make sure it's not TTTS.
Hopefully everything will be ok and please keep me posted on your case.

:hug99: I'm sorry you are facing this worry. Twin pregnancy is hard enough without added concern. My girls were always disparate, but it had to do with IUGR and TTTS. Given that they are frats, I agree wtih PP that it could very well just be genetic differences. Keep us updated :hug99:

Thanks ladies - you are helping tons!

The only other testing we have done is the blood work that came back at 1 in 40 for downs. We did not do that nuchal scan. The only other option (so far) that the peri has given us is doing the amnio.

My girls were three weeks different size wise because of a 2 vessel cord and side insertion. She had IUGR and was quite a bit frailer. She has a heart defect and is behind a bit developmentaly. On twins the downs test can be way off.

This is so true. I was 32 when I got pregnant with my boys and I had to see a genetic specialist because of my "advanced maternal age." I was cautioned with my older singleton that the quad screen produces false positives so we declined it. So when I was with the specialist I had them call the lab that they would be sending the bloodwork to and they said that the quad screen marker for Downs was off almost 50% with twins and it went downhill from there with the rest of the bloodwork. So we declined it unless the u/s revealed an issue. Sorry for the tangent but I thought that might make you feel better too.

I also agree with the fraternal thing. They are just siblings who are being born at the same time. The will be different in size. :hug99:

How long have you known you are having twins and how often are they measuring? The reason I ask is that I didn't find out until 20 weeks that I was having twins and at that point they had a 2 week difference in size. The OB I had at the time started listing all the possibilities of what could be causing the discrepancy - ttts (they had a fused placenta so at that time we couldn't tell if they were ID or frat), genetic disorders, etc. She really didn't give us much hope. Luckily I ended up with a different team of doctors and was having ultrasounds every week. We were later able to see that although the girls were quite different in size, they were both growing the right amount per week so we don't know how baby B initially got behind. Although she continued to be under the 10% curve (was 5% at birth), one of my favourite doctors pointed out that some babies are just little! At birth my "little one" was a healthy 5lb 6oz while her bigger sister was 6lbs 8oz. My bigger girl had a little NICU time, her little sister that we had worried about for so long had no NICU time. 16 months later and they have a 4 lb size difference and my little one is 50th percentile for height but is still only around the 10th percentile for weight. She has a petite bone structure.

Keep strong and get lots of rest. If you are put on bedrest comply as much as you can even though it is really hard. I don't have any regrets about the time I spent in hospital and on bedrest helping my babies grow. Take care and I'm sending positive thoughts your way. Please keep us informed. Deni

Hi, I had find out that I am having a frat and with two placentas. And same as you, I have a option of doing the amnio. I had decided not to just because there is a risk that my water might break and causes preterm labor.
BAby A- 1 lbs 7 oz. 6.8 cm of fluid
Baby B- 8 oz. 1.9 cm of fluid (not doing well)

I still have hope and prey everyday.
