My guys had their 6 mth check up yesterday and they are right on schedule with their development for the most part. However, the one area they aren't even close to yet is sitting. They can both sit if you put them in your lap and hold them up a little. However, if you try to prop them on their hands, they both do face pants within a few seconds. The dr wasn't really concerned since they were a month early and are on track with everything else, but suggested we work on it. What did you do to teach your LO to sit? We have tried the Bumbo seats, but they immediately try to flip themselves out. Any other suggestions?

    Thanks!

Bumbos are actually not great for teaching how to sit. My boys physical therapist is not a fan. You are better off just sitting with them on the floor and helping to support them. I would do one at a time while the other played on their tummy because that can also work on those muscles. My pt also did a lot of tummy time on a ball which strengthened their trunk muscles.

Mine hated the Bumbo. We just propped them up in front of us to give them support or put them up with some pillows around them. Mine didnt start sitting independently until they were 7 months old.

Mine were not sitting independently at 6 months either, they'd topple over.

I sat them on the floor & helped support them a bit or propped pillows all around them for support.

We would sit on the floor with our legs just far enough apart to put them in the middle and then we would assist them as needed.

Mine were not independently sitting at that age either.

Mine just started sitting last week at almost 7 months. One day they couldn't do it and the next day they could. They started sitting within one day of each other.

The boys did not sit on their own until they were 8 months old...literally to the day. My ped was not concerned, nor was I (they were generally a little on the late end of "normal" for most of those milestones). Just take time and sit with them in the floor and eventually they'll do it. It was a while after that before they could get themselves into a sitting position as well.

Yeah I don't think Bumbos do much to help them learn to sit more as it gives a tiny baby the chance to sit and look around. I just kept sitting them up and let them topple, sit them up let them topple.....it was tiring but after a week or so they were strong enough to go more than 1 minute (maybe 5) and now one is crawling and the other is sitting so much better!!!:) I say just prop prop prop!! Oh and mine weren't sitting at 6 months either, they were closer to 7 months

I am a fan of the bumbo, i beleive it really helped both the girls gain upperbody strengh. I also put ours on the bed with pillows around them to cushion the inevitable blow! They loved it! They both sit beautifully now. Practice makes perfect.

We'd do this too. Or put soft things around them so when they did fall [which they will ;) ] it would be a softer landing. ^_^

Btw, mine were about 7 months before they sat completely unassisted.

I used the Boppy around them so when they fell back (as mine would do) they didn't get hurt. Jake sat up for about 10 seconds two weeks into 7 months and Ryan could only do it for 5 seconds. We discovered this at an Early Intervention assessment and they said Ryan's time counted as sitting unassisted. After that he picked up on it really quickly.

My girls weren't sitting up on their own until right around 7 months. My dd's pt told me to sit behind her and when she would start leaning to a side, to put pressure on the opposite side leg with your hand to keep her from falling. She said that this would help her feel the falling sensation and they would try to right themselves. After we started doing this, the girls were sitting within a week on their own. Once I felt they could pretty much do it on their own but were still a little wobbly, I would just put a boppy around them.
