Sitting up...

Just wondering when babies are "supposed" to be able to sit up on their own. Karis did right at 5 months, but the twins aren't yet. Is it around 6 months that's more normal? Thanks! They both roll both directions and and one tries to get her knees up under her. She can sort of push with her foot and move a bit. I know I shoudn't compare them to their older sister, but I can't help but do that just a little bit. :) Plus, a friend of mine has a little girl just a couple weeks older who has already been crawling since about 5 months! I know that's NOT "normal"!

I wonder about this too. Mine do ok with supported sitting (high chairs, sitting on the floor with me to keep them from toppling), but are not even close to sitting on their own yet.

    Hope somebody has some answers...

My doctor said they need to be able to sit up for 1 minute before 9 months (most babies do). My oldest sat well (no hands on the floor, and for a couple of minutes) at 7 1/2 months, my twins were 8 months. I always understood that most children sit well between 6 and 9 months.

If I remember correctly, I read it was between 7 and 9 months.

Meara started sitting up unassisted around 6 months, but our ped said that she was ahead. Ana won't sit up if you put her in a sitting position even now at almost 8 months (too busy moving!), but just last week she learned how to get herself into a sitting position and now she'll sit. Guess that will be her personality "Let me do it MYSELF!"

My older one sat right at 6 months, which I think is on the earlier side of average.....but she came at 40 weeks, so I expect these little ones to take a lot longer....

I believe norm is between 6-9 months, as per my ped.

Jonas sat by himself at 7 1/2 months and Lucas did at 8 months on the dot.

They had been good supported sitters since about 4 months (bebepod, high chairs...good in the exersaucer, jumperoo closer to 5 months).

As for crawling, different schools of thought, but my ped doesn't really use crawling as a developmental milestone but said on average crawling doesn't begin until 8-12 months and that it's okay that some babies don't crawl. Lucas is very close to crawling (lots of rocking back and forth and looking like a "crab" crawl may develop) but Jonas has no interest. He prefers for you to stand him up (we usually put his hands on the sofa) and he just stands there laughing.

My oldest was sitting my herself by 6 months and hasn't quit moving since! The twins are 7 1/2 months and can only sit unassisted for 10-20 seconds before falling over. I think they are o.k., but I can't help worrying sometimes.

Thanks! I guess Karis was a bit ahead in most things (sat at 5 months, crawled at 7, walked at 9 mos., etc.). I don't know why we're always so eager for our babies to do new things. I actually kind of hope these girls will be a bit behind Karis developmentally. It's fine with me if they don't walk as early as her (and get into things sooner)! :) I have several friends who have babies around the same age, and one of them especially is always telling me every new thing her daughter is doing. That's the one whose baby is crawling at 5 months and sat up before that. I know she's just a proud first time parent who has more time to devote to her one child, but I guess it kind of "gets to me" a little bit. I'm glad to know we're "normal." :D

My older DD sat at 6 mo but she was 41 weeks when born. My boys sat at 7 and 8 months actual unsupported but there is a wide range of what the "norm" is. It is very hard for me not to compare my boys with my first DD.

We have friends like that too! Their daughter was born 10 days before our girls and is already cruising. But she was full term (ours are 34 weekers) and is an only so she get a lot of undivided attention. But every time we talk we have this type of conversation "Are the ladies standing yet? Oh really, no huh. Well are they crawling?" etc etc.

I try not to let it bug me too much since DH and I consider our girls to be 2 months younger as opposed to 2 weeks younger, but its still a bit annoying. Just me being competitive I guess :)

I was going to post about this so I'm glad you did. Just wanted to tell you that mine are in the same boat as yours. They sit pretty well if they are supported a little but they don't seem even close to being able to sit up unassisted. They really haven't gotten the hang of rolling from back to belly either but they instantly flip the other way if they are on their bellies. Jack has started to crawl backwards, I'll have him on a blanket on the floor and look down and his legs and butt will be completely under the couch . James has all the motions right to crawl but hasn't figured out that he has to put his arms and legs on the floor to do it.

Mine are pretty good sitters now, but even now I still put something behind them (not supporting them though) but they still occasionally fall straight back and we have hard floors. DS was rolling well at about 6.5 months, and DD was probably a month after that.

Ditto on the friends with one baby always asking what ours are doing! I have one friend who's DS is 3 months younger, and he is apparently doing all the same things mine are...oh well!

My babies started at 7.5 months. I thought that was pretty advanced!!!
