My LOs have been able to stay sitting up without support for a while now. They still can't get into the sitting position on their own, but if I set them down that way, they'll sit there playing with toys forever! Even though they don't seem that wobbly anymore, I still put a few pillows around on the floor "just in case." I don't use boppies or anything restrictive, just a few throw pillows strategically placed so if they suddenly flop back if would cushion the fall. If I'm sitting with them, I don't even use anything behind them, but I stretch out so that I can catch them if I see a wobble. My question is when do you stop being paranoid? They rarely fall over, but it does still happen now and then, and when DS decides he's done sitting, sometimes he LAUNCHES himself backwards pretty forcefully so the pillow catches him. How will I know when I can stop with the pillows? Do I wait until they are putting themselves into the sitting position? DD can get out of it pretty well...she puts her hands out and kind of rolls down if she wants something on the floor beyond her reach...so is she ready for no pillows? I just don't want them to smack their little heads! First time mom here, can you tell? What did you do?

BTW, I just have to say that I think it's so adorable to have them sitting facing each other around a pile of toys...they have so much fun chattering with each other while they play! I love it!!

LOL! Probably never! Just kidding, the stronger and more sturdy they get then the less you will feel like you need to watch them so closely. I bet it will only be a couple of weeks.

I have to agree with you. I love watching my girls play with each other while sitting. Mine are in the same boat as you.. they've been sitting up for a little over a month now and are pretty stinkin good at it, although I'm still worried they'll fall and smack their heads on the floor. I usually sit them up next to each other [so their backs are about 5 inches from the couch] here's a photo: http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h241/Hal...eo7mos3wksI.jpg & http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h241/Hal...eo7mos3wksI.jpg.

That way, if they fall backwards they'll lean against the couch and most of the time they're able to re-adjust themselves back into the sitting position. They've fallen to the sides and the front a couple times.. and have cried, but lately they seem to transition into tummy time w/o a fuss ^_^ They're going to bonk their heads sometimes. And that's another way how they learn. I always be sure to keep the hard toys [that can hurt them if they fall] out of 'falling distance'.

As far as the WHEN factor of falling over and going into sitting on their own. .I have not clue, lol. But I think practice makes perfect and this way they can learn - cause and effect and soon they'll become strong enough to manouver whichever way they want to go ^_^

I hope that wasn't confusing

It sounds like they can go without them now, if you feel comfortable with that. It sounds like DS just uses the pillows to play with, which is really cute by the way!

I may try the couch idea...although mine isn't quite as padded as yours, Suzy! BTW, those pics are adorable! I'm glad I'm not the inly one with constantly sock-less or one-socked babies ;) SweetGirl - do you think DS is playing when he flops back like that? I dread the first time he tries it with no pillow...

 yeah, I typically don't even put socks on them unless we're going out for a walk or if their toesies are cold. They tug on them instantaneously.. almost pointless, LOL.

haha, my girls are not even 3 months and DH calls them the sock ninjas. They can somehow get both socks off while you're giving them a bottle. I think they just hate having their feet covered and of course, I have newborn babies during the coldest part of the year!

I don't think the paranoia ever ends! I know when mine were learning to sit up, we did not have pillows around them (our floor is carpeted), and they did fall down a couple of times but once they got the hang of it, they were fine! I would say pull the pillows when you feel comfortable and feel that they have a better grasp of sitting up. Good luck!

This is about where mine are at too. DS is a little more advanced than DD in the sitting arena. So I put a pillow behind her still, but I don't behind DS. He's taken a couple pretty good spills, but since I've taken the pillow away, he's gotten really good at getting down to the floor by himself. And he's quit launching himself backwards also

I also love watching them play facing each other. Twins are the greatest blessing, truly

I dont think being worried about them changes ever. Mine are just starting to sit up fairly well and it is cute to see the wobbling. I think they will just have to take a few so that maybe next time they wont.
