We're rapidly closing in on the one year mark and our DD's still don't use their sippy cups very well. We introduced them early at 7 months hoping they'd be pros by now. I'm pretty sure the pedi is going to give us the go ahead to begin cow's milk at their one year check up and I'm worried it won't go well using their sippys. I'm still breastfeeding and haven't made up my mind on when to wean. They usually only get one bottle of EBM at nighttime and they aren't even interested in holding them up on their own either. I was really hoping not to have to use bottles for their cow milk. We don't own many and I'd like to keep it that way.

We try to give them sippys filled with a little water or watered-down pear juice with each meal. When they do drink from them, they usually let their mouths hang open and let the water dribble out. We've tried many different kinds too. Soft spout, valve-less, ones with straws. I swear it's like they think they are giant chew toys because that's all they seem to do with them.

What are some tricks try and teach them how to better use their sippys?

The only thing I can really recommend is to just keep giving it to them. Maybe demonstrate how to use it every now & then but, other than that, it just takes time. Especially if you've already tried different kinds.

Yep, just keep offering them. They will eventually get the hang of them. :headbang:

That's the only thing I can suggest as well is to keep offering them

Keep offering, and with my kids, if they knew they were going to get a bottle, they would absolutely refuse to drink from sippies. I ended up going cold turkey with them to make the transition.

I think repetition is the key! Just keep offering it and one day they will take it. They might just not be ready yet. Now if they are getting to be near 15 months and still are refusing the sippy, at that point I'd be a little more insistent about it. But at 11 months old I would just keep trying like you have been.

Mine did the same thing. Started very early with the introduction and had absolutely no luck. They drove me crazy with the sippys. When we got ready to switch off bottles at 13 months we had to go cold turkey for the daytime (kept the night time one for another month). By the end of the first day they were drinking out of them fine.

Like pps...repetition. My boys did not do well with sippies until we lost bottles and switched to sippies of milk/water/juice full time. It took them a couple of days and then they were pros. We started with the Nuby, soft spouts, and once they had the hang of that we switched to Playtex.

Even though i started my boys around 7 months they still get bottles...They will take sippy cups with handles no problem but the other sippy cups without handles they hate and most time refuse to drink from them, so depending on my mood i will either pour the remainder of their formula into another handle holding sippy cup or a bottle just so they can finish their milk. But the key is to keep trying every day give them their sippy cups, i never forced my boys to have to drink from their cups, in the beginning if they drank a few ounces from the sippy before i had to transfer to bottle then i was proud of them...just keep giving them the cups, dont get tooo discouraged, they will get it. Also, try different sippy cups as well, my boys prefer certain ones over others i have bought, so it could be a sippy cup preference...Good luck!!

Also, i should say that my boys use sippy cups more now than bottles....it just takes time!!

Thanks all. We'll keep trying and hopefully they'll pick it up pretty soon. I'm doing my best not to "push" them to do things and let it happen naturally. It's so hard sometimes.
