i amtrying to get them to drink from a sippy cup but they just won't do it. they chew on it is all. i tried taking out spill proof think and letting them know their is formula in their but they just don't get it. my DS won't drink any juice or water he pushes it away. i can get DD to drink juice but only from a bottle. they just want to play with the sippy cup.

I started offering a sippy after they were 6 months old...just with water. I tried valve, no valve, etc. Finally, around 11 months, they just started drinking from it, after me offering it and holding it to their mouths for them. I think it just finally clicked for them. Now we do whole milk during meals with sippy cups and water or diluted juice for snack time.

I use the Nuby ones but everyone has a different preference...my boys will not drink from any other sippy cup.

It just took time, and numerous (too many to count) offerings of the sippy cup before they decided it wasn't a teething toy or something to bang around.

    Good luck!

I just found the Nuby sippy's too. I'm using the one with the soft "bottle nipple" silicone mouth piece. I think it's enough like a bottle that they could figure it out. It's the only type that they will use.

I also have had better luck w/the Nuby's cups -- i think, like a pp said, it's most like a bottle which is why it works. We put formula in there and then offer sips right before and after solid meals, like while they are still sitting in their high chairs. Some days are better than others but they are getting the hang of it. We've been at it for about 2 months now. This weekend we will try substituting one bottle with a more full sippy cup and see how that goes.

Have you tried the type with a straw? The speech language path. recommended these for better oral motor development.

We got the Nuby's at Walmart. Love them, and they inexpenisive, too!

About the straw cups, I think you'd be surprised! Of course babies will play at first (chomping and biting). It's almost accidental when they do take that first sip (and boy, are they surprised!). Then they want another! Good luck!

I tried with the sippy for a good 5 months before they FINALLY got it. Seriously I was giving them a sippy at every meal starting at 7 months. Finally at 12 months DS got it and a few weeks later DD started drinking (and not throwing it on the floor which is what usually happened since she was VERY resistant to it) Now they drink all their liquids (milk and water) during the day. They still get a bottle in the morning and before bed..we will be eliminating the morning bottle shortly.

I tried every type of sippy (plus straw cup) and it was the Nuby ones that they finally took to.

Straw cups!!! Elizabeth figured the straw cup out on her first try. C&A had a much easier time with them than regular sippies as well.

I found that the Avent cups were really hard to suck anything out of (yes, I tried it). I ended up using the First Years Take and Toss 4 ounce ones because they were small and easy for little hands to grasp. Once they really started sucking on the spout I changed to the Gerber ones that change colors and now we also use the Nuby Straw cups.
