I have been giving the boys sippy cups when they are in their high chairs. They think they are a toy and mostly chew on the spouts. I hold it up and sometimes one of them will actually suck out of it. But once the milk comes out, I think they are so startled that they spit it out. Any suggestions? When do they "get it"?????

    ;)

Mine got it about a week after I started giving them sippies. We have the Nuby ones that have the soft spout and handles. I think those are easier for them to "get" since they wanted nothing to do with the hard plastic spouted ones. I have noticed that if my babies are sitting upright they have a very difficult time getting anything out of the cup and just play with it. I either put them in their carseats or prop them up with a pillow so they are on an incline rather than sitting straight up and they do much better.

I have tried the nubbys, but when they bite (instead of suck) they get so much milk all over them. Is that just part of the process of learning?
    Thanks

We had the same problem here and the thing i found was to switch the cups. We found that the Gerber cups here worked wonders and helped them get the idea of the sippy cups. They had th eproblem that they coldnt tip it back enough and when they did they were tipping their heads too far back and the milk would come out and choke them/surprise them....so we did these which are tipped at the top already and within a few days (when they were about 6/7 months) we ahd sippy cups down..... i would reccomend trying these, the spouts are soft too so....

    Good luck

Mine actually didn't really get them until we took away bottles at 11 1/2 months. I did get them used to them by using Tupperware sippys--they don't have a valve, so they don't have to work so hard to figure it out.

I put on the Eric Carle DVD story series.....put the boys lounging on their boppy pillows and give them a sippy of 1/2 juice and 1/2 water. They relax and drink their juice. Sometimes they use the nipple though to chew since we are going through teething. I use the NUK brand.

If you use Avent, they sell soft sippie tops for the bottles. We use these and i think they are pretty good. The liquid doesn't come out too fast.

I use the Avent ones too. My two seem to know what they are all about & will take a few sips, then bang it on their tray & toss it on the floor. I just keep offering it, usually at meal time. They will eventually get it!

I started my firstborn at 4 months. I put a little formula in it at a time and just let him try it out every once in awhile. That way he was already used to it when I got rid the the bottles the day before he turned 1. He fussed for 1 day w/out the bottle and took the sippy cup right away. I plan on doing the same with my girls when they turn 4 months old.

I started very slowly at about 6 months because I knew it would be a learning process....I packed up the bottles last week at 13.5 mos...I started out with water in them and I took the valves out of them so they didn't have to suck too hard - once they got used to them then my mom started them with formula in the cups and then finally they take everything from the cup...and they have been since about a year but mommy was sorta lazy and enjoying handing them a bottle and not worrying about them finishing it....

oh and we use the Gerber SipnSmile also because they are curved and because they have a cute little divot in the top for their noses...and I didn't start with soft spout cups - they didn't like them we went right to the hard spouted cups....

I started offering sippy cups at 6 months and mine just started figuring them out a month or so ago. The best thing I did was take out the little stopper on the inside so it flowed out without them sucking. The got frustrated at first when I put the stopper back in because the liquid was not just coming out. However, this let them know that there was something in there that they had to work for. It took many months and I thought they would never get it . . . but they have. YIPPIE! Just stick with it.
