DH is eager to get rid of them for the boys. They drink fine out of a regular cup. But they only have those at the table. Sippy cups will travel! LOL! They are 3.5 years old. When they wake, they get a sippy cup filled with milk, a sippy cup filled with milk with lunch, and then dinner. If I am too lazy to do the great sippy cup search, then I will give them milk/whatever in a regular cup.

3.5 too young? For Anthony, the sippy cup seems to be a comfort thing. He wakes up, has his blanket on his lap, and drinks the entire cup of milk before coming up for air! Is this something we should work on?

We still use them here and I have a feeling we will until Ethan is 3y. Mostly because he still comes over and shakes the cups. We do use the straw sippy cups and the take and toss ones when we travel and that helps because I don't feel like I'm cleaning them all the time.

At 4 I finally threw them all away except for two travel nalgene cups that we use to travel.

At almost 3 1/2 we still use them because I get tired of cleaning up spilled milk/water/juice. My boys have a habit of taking the others cup and pouring their drink into their own cup and they usually miss and it ends on the floor.

we pretty much only use sippies at night (the girls have sippies of water by their bed). otherwise, they get milk/water in cups during the day.

We are almost 4 here, and we use regular cups at all meals. They have sippies for traveling and then one in their room for at night or really any other time they are thirsty during the day between meals. They just go get them when they are thirsty and I don't have to deal with them unless they are empty. At this point its way easier than going to the kitchen and getting them a glass of water ;)

We still use them. We can use regular cups but I swear every time we give one, they spill it because they are careless (not when drinking, but when eating, grabbing something on the table, etc).

My pediatrician recommended i stop them at our 2 year check up! I said no way i'm stopping them yet, my house would be a disaster. I guess the thought is that it can increase tooth decay, they are more likely to 'nurse' on a sippy cup all day long... something like that. I am hoping no sippy cups by 4 though.

Same here. I've practiced with regular cups with my two and they still make too much of a mess.

We went to the dentist about a month ago, and she asked if they had a sippy all day long. I said no. I said they drink in one sitting. She said that was a *good* thing because they are not sipping constantly throughout the day, which is bad for the teeth.

I will say it will be really nice when I can leave the house and not have to make sure I have three sippy cups with me! Ugh! And let's not forget the 23 month old who misplaces hers on a regular basis.... eeewwwwwww!

I finally got rid of my dd's about a year ago, so about age 3.5, but we usually have a bottle of water with us when we go places so she can have something to drink. The twins still use theirs all the time though, very rarely I'll give them some orange juice or flavored milk in a regular cup, but only at the kitchen table.

We are, however, using pretty much all straw cups now, they only get sippy cups when I can't find the straw cup pieces!

I guess I should clarify...they are on straw cups... I just base all cups as sippy cups! Lol! And that whole leak proof stuff is a bunch of baloney! Lol!

Maybe I will start working towards no sippy cups!

We went sippy free at about 2 1/2. They got on a big "big kid" kick and wanted to drink out of "big kid cups" like everyone else. So we said good bye to the sippy cups. They had been using regular cups at school since they said goodbye to the bottle at a year, so after a year and a half of practice at school and sometimes at home we didn't really even notice other than the fact that they started drinking a lot more. They were never big milk drinkers, going to big kid cups definately helped there.

We still use them on a regular basis. They have sippies of water by their beds. They also usually have a sippy of water somewhere on the main floor. They sometimes ask for a sippy of milk in the evening which I allow them to have in the living room. There's no way I could do that with a normal cup. We also use them for traveling. They drink out of cups just fine, so I don't feel the need to get rid of the sippy cups. They are just tidier.

We've just recently given them up. They can drink from an open cup...BUT...I only give them an open cup if we are seated at the table because it never fails one gets spilled. We use straw cups with lids and the sport drink bottles in between meals and in the car.

After Christmas (at 32 mo) I decided I was so tired of all the plastics... and got rid of all the plastic sippies, I got some aluminum ones, that we started to use short (sturdy) glasses at the table. then I got lazy and sippies started to be used at the dinner table. I'm trying to go back to glasses at the table. for the most part they are really good with them.

the issues I have are that they sometimes pour the milk/water out of the cups into their bowls/plates - UGH. or that they start playing in the open cups... ah well, they have to learn sometime. I just try to take them away quickly/quietly when they start to play.

good luck! I still use the sippies when they are in the car.

my girls are like your boys. they want their sippy of milk in the morning, and before bed. they HAVE to have their sippy of milk before bed. (of course, we brush their teeth right after). it's a comfort thing. they've had bottles/sippies before bed since they were babies, so i don't know HOW we're gonna give them up!
they drink out of cups at mealtimes, but sippies for water all day, that they carry around the house with them, and out of the house.
i'm sick of them, too, tho.

We stopped using sippy cups by around 2 1/2. We would use them in the car for traveling, but that was it. Now we have water bottles that we use in the car for trips.

For the last 6 months or so we only use open cups at the table with meals. I give them a sippy in the morning in front of the tv and that's pretty much it. I bought them a small sports type water bottle to leave water out during the day in, to encourage them to drink more water when we're out in the summer. Right now they're just not big drinkers during the day.

BUT my kids don't drink milk the way they used to. They were always huge milk drinkers, but don't drink much out of the open cups. They know how, are good with them, rarely have accidents with them and they know they have to stay at the table. But I think the sippy is just a comfort thing and that's why they'd always guzzle the entire cup full of milk. I asked the doctor at their 3 year visit what was more important, the milk intake or getting rid of sippies. She suggested to keep at it with the milk in open cups, but maybe giving it more often for all 3 meals and snacks will help them get their intake in. She also suggested maybe just giving one sippy a day if it helps get the intake in. But we're still doing really bad with their milk intake, mainly because we got into the bad habit of giving them juice in their morning sippy. I don't know how to break them of it peacefully, other than maybe offering chocolate milk - which I've been hesitating introducing them to, because I figure they'd want it all the time. I keep hoping they'll just end up drinking more at meals to make up for it. But I'm thinking maybe I should either go back to sippies just to get their milk in, or start the battle of changing their morning juice over to milk.

This is us too. Both kids can drink out of open cups just fine, but they are so in the habit of having milk in a sippy when they wake up and after baths in the evening. DS is such a creature of habit it will be very hard to break him of this habit. I do think when they turn 4 we will get some of the nicer spout bottles (like Thermos Foogoo or Kleen Kanteen sport bottles) and get rid of the cheap Playtex sippies.
