My twins are 11 months now! (don't get me started on that.. I really can't believe soon we will be out of the first year!!) They haven't had sippy cups yet. I tried last week but neither one knew what to do. We just give them bottles of formula, adn lately when it's hot and we are out, I'll tehy will drink a little water in the bottle. I was just looking at the 11 month schedules on this website and almost everyone seemed to be transitioned to sippy cups in that forum! So..... how do I transition? How do I teach them how to use it?? What I plan on for now is to continue their bottles of formula, but to give them sippy cups for water.. anyone know how to do this? Thanks!

We just kept offering the sippy cups throughout the day, mine played with them for a while before they got the concept of what to do with a sippy cup. We started off with the Nuby soft spout ones. Good luck!

I second the Nuby or Munchkin soft spout ones at the beginning. It's more like a nipple. Just keep offering it and they'll get it eventually. I think I started out with water in it with their meals. Once mine figured out how to bite the spout so it ripped and water would pour out, we got the Gerber sippys and now we are on the Playtex ones. Good luck and don't stress. They'll figure it out.

It's all about finding the ones they like. Mine have been drinking out of cups since 6/7 months. Daugther will use any, so she is using the harder cups. My son will only use the Dr. Brown's with handles. We have tried everything with that boy. We just kept offering themcups and eventually they started drinking a whole 6oz out of it and we never went back.

We started with these: http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp...WELAID=61281213 around 8 months. They have a soft spout so it's easy [and comfortable] for them to drink out of.

I put water in em' and offered them during feedings in their high chairs. They'd play with them and toss them over the edge many many times. About 3 wks later I think a lightbulb went off in their head and [at the same time] started drinking out of them. They now LOVE their sippies. We still only put water in them [though some put juice also].

it does take them a while to get the concept of what to do with the sippy.. i think mine played with them for at least 2 weeks before figuring it out. i also demonstrated for them and that seemed to help them understand what to do..

just keep trying, they will get it.

We just kept offering it to them every now & then and eventually they just go it. We would give it to them & let them play with it for awhile and it didn't take long before they discovered what to do with it!

I offer them while the girls are in their exersaucers or playing on the floor. BK has taken a liking to them, but Aurora is not so interested. I put two pieces of ice in there so that they clink and rattle and Aurora perked up. BK can get a little frustrated at times if she can't get it just right, but we're still practicing.

    Good luck!

    hi!
we just offered them, as the pp mentioned, they would just play with them. actually ryan wanted nothign to do with them, until one day he just started drinking from it. christopher got the concept pretty quickly. we use the gerber ones and removed the 'stopper' it's a bit messy, but they really enjoy it. they don't drink alot, it's still a 'game'...but we offer water to them at every meal, and they love them...see attatched pics

We started putting them on their trays at meal times when they were about 8 months old. We used the Take N Toss from The First Years because when they tipped it over, a little bit would come out so they kinda knew that their was something inside the cup to drink. It didn't require a lot of sucking at first and now that they know how to use them, they just suck it back no problem. I would just put the cups on their trays with a little bit of water and see what they do!

I've been offering sippies for at least 3 months now, and my guys still don't get it. I mean they'll drink if I tip the cups up for them, but if I let them hold the handles, they just shake them and throw them off the high chairs.

Maybe my boys are slow.... ;)

When i started the girls off on solids i also introduced the sippy cup with water. We use the tomy tippee cup and at first it was just something for them to play with and i would just help them pour water in there mouths. Nowadays Amber is so good at drinking from it, i just leave her to it and Ruby is getting there, she hasn't quite grasped how to pick it up herself yet but knows how to suck and gets excited when she see's it lol I would just let them have a play, give them a drink and see how they do. Good luck!

We also used the Take and Toss First Years sippy cups to start with. I think it's a great first sippy in that it has no valve so once it's tipped they get stuff out of it. We started just putting water in it with meals or to set on a table during the day. Gradually they started using it more and then we went to formula and then to milk in them. GL!
