dd is more than ready to make the switch, ds not so much, tried him for the first time (he's had them with water before) but at the normal bottle time I gave him milk in a sippy instead. He pitched a major fit and wouldn't drink it, after 30 min I gave in as dh said maybe he's not ready....
    :(
    how do you handle this?

My dd was ready at 13 months and ds wasn't so I just gave her a sippy cup and ds waited until he was 19 months to make the switch. :good: Do you not want to only switch one of them?

When both of my twins were switching from bottle to sippy, both of them would only take water from the sippy and would not drink milk or formula out of it. So we introduced a different kind of sippy just for milk and that helped ease the transition. Both of mine were not bottle free until 16 months, so if you feel one is not ready then I second what Liz said, go ahead an transition the one who is ready and when the other is ready then transition them. Good luck!

I would like to have them both switch at the same time.
My fear is he will never give up the bottle......and never be ready...I've heard of kids with bottles till they're 3 or 4....how do you know when they are ready?

The only way I could get my girls to switch over was to take away their bottles cold turkey. The first couple days were a little rough, and their intake went way down but after a couple of days they "got it" and it has been smooth sailing ever since. Whatever you decide my best advice is to be consistent. If you give in they are going to know that if they throw a fit they can get what they want. Best of Luck!

I was thinking about that. Doing cold turkey but I'm not sure my ds really gets what is going on.....:( He isn't really throwing a temper tantrum just upset it isn't the bottle.....I don't know I go back and forth...

We're not there yet, but I am planning on purchasing a new sippy when we transition so we have one for water and a different one for milk. We have a soft-spout one currently for their water sippies. Thinking of getting the straw-type of sippy for the milk and see how it goes. Good luck, mama. Just try to be patient with your little one. And remember that every person will do things at their own pace. ^_^

Not read the other answers. Elliot has been on a sippy for months. Max still has 2 bottles a day. I am soooooo not worried about it. When his milk intake decreases even more and definitely before 2 I will just take the bottles away - simple.

I took the bottles away except for the nighttime bottle. My DD transitioned better but my DS had a really difficult time. It was a rough 3 weeks. Sometimes he didn't drink any. Sometimes I got him to take a few sips. He did throw a major tantrum so I had to stick to my guns. After the big tantrum though, he honestly was just sad. It was kind of heart-breaking. We used the Nuby with the soft nipple and he has finally taken to it. Now, I have to figure out when to get rid of the night bottle but selfishly I like that they just suck it down, we brush teeth and then they go to bed. I think with the sippy at night they would kind of putz around with it!

Good luck. Whatever you decide to do! I don't really think there is a right or wrong.

Both of my boys are bottle free. We started them with a sippy with a soft spout just with water and then with formula. They could have cared less what they were drinking out of as long as they were getting something. One day I just put the bottles away and we have been bottle free for the last month. For them it was a really easy transition.

We pretty much did it cold turkey by giving them milk sippies with meals and just getting rid of the inbetween meals bottles. They never saw the difference honestly!
