I think it makes a lot of sense- because they shouldn't be drinking too much juice and they need to start learning to drink from cups and not be dependent on bottles. My little guys are no experts at cups by any means- but they started drinking little sips of water from them at close to six months. They enjoy it already and it has only been 3 or 4 weeks we've been doing it. My guys are sitting up, but not very long.
I noticed you were from Canton... my father and I were born in Portsmouth, Ohio and my grandpa was born in Canton.
    take care-

Mine don't hold their bottle either- I've been experimenting with different sippies to see which ones are easy for them to kinda hold- but really it is all about the amount of liquid in them being heavy. They'll get the hang of it eventually!! There are sippies that have a longer spout that is soft and easier for them to manage- most say to transition to those first.
I know about the boredom! I've lived in CA since I was a year old- but, we see family every few years in Ohio. Where I was born is worse than Canton!

They really don't need juice, so make them work for it! There's no food value and it's better for them to take their formula or breastmilk as their fluids anyhow.

I would get some handle type sippys to try. They CAN do it, you have to give them the incentive. You might be sorry later if you continue it in the bottle. Good luck!

We started trying sippies around 6 months with 1/2 juice and 1/2 water. At that point neither of my girls were holding their own bottles. Now they both drink from the sippies well, but neither of them can hold it and drink from it at the same time. Josie holds her own bottle, but she doesn't get that she has to tip it up, so she can only drink it by herself if she's reclined back on a pillow. Same thing with the sippies. I'm hoping eventually she'll get the hang of the straw sippies, since she doesn't have to tip those back [IMG]

I don't feel comfortable doing juice at this point, so I put room temperature water in an Avent sippy with handles. DD LOVES it and tries to hold it, but DS shudders every time that he gets water in his mouth. The way he looks at me is pretty funny. Neither one holds their bottle, and I'm okay with that! If they don't learn how, maybe the separation won't be as bad down the line.

We've been giving sippy cups to our girls since right after their 6 month appointment. We give them water with each meal. I very rarely give them any juice. The few times I have, they don't drink it as well as they drink the plain water. They have gotten to where they drink almost the entire cup of water after their meals. We use the Nuby cups with handles. I have some of the others without handles, but they can't hold them as well. I think they get too heavy when you fill them up. Neither of my girls will hold their bottle on their own. They might hold it for a few seconds, but then they let go and drop it. They don't have any problems holding the sippy cups.

From the time we started giving them solids we also gave them water in a sippie (5 months). At first they just take a couple sips while we held it, but now they can manage to get it in their mouth themselves, if they are feeling patient enough that day.[IMG]

We always give them water in it though, never juice. I didn't want to give them those empty calories, I struggle to get them to eat enough as it is. They love water!

We have luck with the Avent attachments to their 4 ounce bottles (handle and sippie top).
