I've noticed that a lot of twinnies our age are starting sippy cups. So, of course, I'm wondering if we should be too. I bought some yesterday as they are showing interest in "mommy's sippy cup". Here are my basic questions:

    Who needs a sippy cup?
What kind do you use and what do you put in them?
    When do you start?
Where do you let them drink (bouncy/exersaucer/high chair/etc)?
Why start before they get milk?

    Here are my basic questions:

Who needs a sippy cup? Not sure I understand.
What kind do you use and what do you put in them? Playtex first sipsters (after trying many many others). We put water in them to start.
When do you start? I think I started giving it to them at mealtimes when they were between 7 and 8 months old. Meara got it immediately. Ana took a little time to get the concept.
Where do you let them drink (bouncy/exersaucer/high chair/etc)? Initially only in their highchairs. But now that they are mobile and we are phasing out bottles, they get water sippies all day long and can drink wherever they want.
Why start before they get milk? I felt it gave them some practice and now that they get milk at mealtimes in them, they already know how to drink from them. HTH!

Who needs a sippy cup? ANY KID THAT YOU DON'T WANT DUMPING LIQUID ON YOUR FLOOR FROM A REGULAR CUP...LOL
What kind do you use and what do you put in them? WE WENT THROUGH EVERY SIPPY CUP IT SEEMED LIKE. MINE DIDN'T GET THE CONCEPT OF TILTING THEM BACK, SO WE FINALLY USED THOSE STRAW TYPE CUPS. AFTER THEY GOT THE HANG OF THOSE, WE STARTED GETTING THEM ACCUSTOMED TO THE REGULAR ONES. I LIKE THE GERBER ONES...SEEM TO LEAK LESS THAN OTHERS FOR US. I PUT WATER IN THEM WHEN THEY FIRST STARTED LEARNING.
When do you start? WE STARTED AROUND 10 MONTHS OR SO...JUST INTRODUCING THEM TO THE CUP. THEY WEREN'T FULLY ON THEM UNTIL AROUND 13-14 MONTHS THOUGH.
Where do you let them drink (bouncy/exersaucer/high chair/etc)? AT FIRST, JUST IN THEIR HIGHCHAIR WITH A MEAL. WHEN THEY GOT TO BE MOBILE AND DRINKING EVERYTHING OUT OF THE SIPPY, I LET THEM HAVE IT WHENEVER, WHEREVER.
Why start before they get milk? I ONLY DID WATER TO GET THEM USED TO A SIPPY CUP...I DON'T REMEMBER GIVING THEM FORMULA IN IT AT ALL. THEY WERE ON WHOLE MILK BEFORE THEY EVEN STARTED TAKING THEM ALL OF THE TIME ANYWAY

Thanks ladies. I'll clarify the Who? I guess I was wondering what age you started. I have such a hard time getting mine to drink enough formula that I'm not sure water will be a good idea. I need them to be getting calories with every sip! Maybe we'll wait a few more months.

    Who needs a sippy cup?
Started giving them around 7 months old...for practice

What kind do you use and what do you put in them?
Nuby...after trying many brands. Water to start. Only offered at meal times for practice.

    When do you start?
Practice around 7 months. Officially with milk, after they turned one year.

Where do you let them drink (bouncy/exersaucer/high chair/etc)?
Highchair. Once they are more mobile, I'll allow them elsewhere.

Why start before they get milk?
Practice. I made the switch to milk in sippies without transition to milk in bottles so I wanted to make sure they were at least familiar with a sippy cup.

    :

Who needs a sippy cup? We started around eight months.

What kind do you use and what do you put in them? We use the Born Free sippies. They're designed to be easy for a baby to suck fluid out of so it's easier for them to figure it out and they don't have to work as hard. The Born Free sippies don't leak at all, which is great.

When do you start? Eight months

Where do you let them drink (bouncy/exersaucer/high chair/etc)? We started while laying back on a boppy pillow so they could drink without having to learn to tip the cup up too. This really helped. Once they figured out there was water in the cups, I started giving them in the high chair. Now they get sippy cups during the day wherever they are.

Why start before they get milk? Because it takes a little while for babies to figure it out. If you try sippies at the same time as you try milk, you may find your transition to milk delayed.

Also... you mentioned you were going to wait a while because you have a hard enough time getting your boys to drink their formula. I haven't noticed any reduction in the amount of formula consumed now that we do sippies of water. Just FYI...

I've heard that it's like paci's - the longer you keep them the more they want them. So our doc recommends no paci's after 6 months unless they really love them and starting sippies so that there are no bottles past 12 months. I think the sooner you start the more likely they are to accept them without a big to-do. Plus it's really fun for them.

What kind do you use and what do you put in them? Playtex The First Sipster Trainers, using with valve, only water
When do you start? I think the earlier the better!
Where do you let them drink (bouncy/exersaucer/high chair/etc)? anywhere and everywhere, u offer the cups to them throughout the day, wherever they may be
Why start before they get milk? so they become accustomed to drinking out of a cup

Who needs a sippy cup? About 6 months or so I started putting water in the sippy at mealtimes in the highchair. Mostly they either starred at it and hoped osmosis would set in.

What kind do you use and what do you put in them? At first the Take and Toss 5 ounce. Very light and no valve to make getting anything alot easier.

When do you start? About 6 months.

Where do you let them drink (bouncy/exersaucer/high chair/etc)? Highchair

Why start before they get milk? To get them off the bottles closer to a year and to be able to leave the house without a dang bottle all the time.

I started with sippys at about 6 months, not really for them to get nourishment from but to practice, so that the transition will be easy when we start to ditch the bottles closer to the 1 year mark. I put water in them and offer them before and after each solids meal while they are sitting in their highchairs. In the beginning they just chewed on them, and I would show them how to tilt the cup up to get the liquid. In about 3 weeks or so they have both figured out how to get the water out of the cup but don't always drink it, DD likes to get the water out and then let it run out of her mouth. We use the Nuby kind, it has a soft, silicione spout. We have played around with the straw cups but haven't had much luck so far. My eventual goal is when they get good at sippies to put their formula in them for breakfast, b/c right now it's sort of a pain to feed them solids and then follow with a bottle, if they drank from the sippy we could do it all at once.

One unexpected thing that has come from this sippy cup business is that from learning to hold onto the sippy they now can hold their own bottles, it's not something I ever practiced or encouraged them to do, they just up and did it one day.

Who needs a sippy cup? We started at 6 months just for fun. Arjun got it right away Indira needed a little practice but not much.
What kind do you use and what do you put in them? I got the Nuby's (cheap, like $3) they have bumps on them for gnawing and great handles. They have not leaked even when thrown on the floor and they can control the flow on the 'nipple' part.
Also I put chamomile tea in mine. Dr. A says they do not need water at this age unless it is really hot out and you want to give sips of it. She wants the main nutrition coming from formula. That is why I opted out of juice giving, empty sugar calories aren't necessary for mine right now. Oh and the tea helps with gas!
    When do you start?
Where do you let them drink (bouncy/exersaucer/high chair/etc)? I did it in the highchair since that is when we will be giving them to them.
Why start before they get milk? Not sure but what pp said about transitioning all at once makes sense.
