My doc is supportive of my trying a VBAC (vaginal birth after c-section). However, there are stipulations. It was over a year from my delivery with the twins to my getting pregnant, I labored well on my own the first time (had the c-section because of "failure to progress" beyond 8 cm and the babies were starting to stress), and I'm otherwise healthy.

Those were my doctor's main considerations so maybe that helps you.

One of the biggest things will be what kind of incision you had; vertical or transverse. And they other things will be looked at; health, reason for c-section, etc.

I had a successful vaginal delivery with my first and then an emergency c-section with the twins (one was in distress). My incision is a low-transverse. I am a "good" candidate for a VBAC and that is what we will be trying for--provided everything goes as planned.

Another factor that can play into it is if the hospital where you will delivery will allow VBACs. The one my first 3 were born in would not allow VBACs because they didn't have an "in-house" anesthesiologist so they did want that liability. Also will your insurance cover a VBAC--some won't.

Good luck and I hope you are able to have a VBAC (if it's really what you want). Just talk to your doctor and research.

I agree with all of what Ronda said...I had a c-sec with the twins due to failure to progress...then I had a VBAC with my dtr (Much better experience for me!) I am trying for a VBAC again this time, but I did have to search for a hosp and Doc who will do it...good luck and if it is what you want...fight for it! It's so worth it in my opinion!!

My dr gave me the choice as to whether I wanted a VBAC or not. My c-section was scheduled with the twins (but my water broke a week prior to my date). I am choosing to have another c-section, but I didn't have any complications with mine so that's why I would prefer going in that direction. Definitely talk with your dr and express your feelings.

I had a vaginal delivery at 41 weeks my oldest. A c section at 35 weeks with the twins, and this one will also be a c section due to my uterine incision (both horizontal and vertical) so I don't have a choice.

Some doctors/hospitals won't do them period. You have a good chance to have a VBAC if:
    • low transverse (horizontal) c-section incision in both out and inside
    • had a scheduled c-section prior due to breech - in other words, did NOT have a failure to progress diagnosis.
    • no tears during the c-section
Good luck! I've got an ideal situation and other than the size of the baby... it should work out! LOL

It's dependant upon a lot of different things (most of what pp have mentioned already). My friend got a MRSA infection in her incision too and had to keep cleaning it and packing it for almost 3 months...how horrible. I had a c/s with my twins and opted for a repeat c/s with my singleton. My hospital and dr. were open to VBAC if I had choose that route.

I would suggest looking up the ICAN-online.org group... very informative! I'm attempting to VBA2C this pregnancy and feel its worth it to attempt for the health of the baby and recovery period for myself.

I had a VBAC with my singleton and that is the plan this time as well. I was actually induced at 41.4 weeks and was in labor for 2 days and it was still better than a c-section. If you don't have a choice, a c-section is a good option but I would never recommend it for someone that it was not absolutely medically necessary. I hope you have a supportive doctor and your wishes can be carried out!
