I have a question... i had to switch the boys to soy about 4 months ago (per ped) after a stomach bug they had.. throwing up FOREVER.. anyway, the boys drank the soy WAY better than milk, and then once i tried to switch them back, the milk made them sick again. SOOO, i asked the ped again, and she said maybe they developed a sensitivity to the milk and that it was fine to keep them on soy, since they drink it better anyway. I was kind of nervous about all the hormones in milk anyway and was kind of wanting to switch them anyway. Sooo, i had a mom the other day tell me she couldnt believe that i let them drink silk.. because if the hormones?? something about making them girly?? Levels of female hormones in soy milk? Especially SILK? Anyone know anything about this???

It is true that all soy products contain plant estrogens. It's a myth that these plant hormones have a feminizing effect on humans. Study after study have shown that they don't. For a while, the soy milk companies were advertising their products as a natural way to calm the symptoms of menopause. Notice that they don't say that anymore because it's been shown to be false.

Since your boys can't tolerate milk, it's great that you have an alternative that they like.

We all drink Silk here (DH is lactose intolerant), and have no problems. I'm still an A cup and everything. ;) Trust me when I tell you there is *nothing* girly about DS1. The boy is 6'1" and has a 6-pack like an underwear model.

All myth. My son drinks Vanilla Soy milk and is very very boy. It's organic etc;. I too was freaked out when someone told me the same myth and did a ton of research. So rest easy!

I worried about that too, because my DH is a vegetarian, we eat LOTS of soy-based meat alternatives, as well as tofu, edamame, etc. But generally it seems it's a myth. So we are still soy fans- it's great protein!

I don't think there is any merit to those claims either - though I do find them funny. Society has no qualms about pumping unnatural things into cows to increase their milk production at the cost of our own health, but are suddenly highly concerned that a diagnosis of lactose intolerance will morph into a future prognosis of becoming effeminate/gay? That's rich.

For those concerned only with hormones (sounds like OP may be trying to avoid lactose as well), there are a lot of options out there. Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Albertson's, Safeway, and Fred Meyer around here all have organic milk options that would eliminate hormones - at least from your milk source. I have also seen milk at some of these stores that is hormone-free, but not organic (there are certification requirements they may not meet to be organic, but are raising hormone-free dairy cows). There are also almond and rice milk options out there, though I am not familiar with how they would compare nutritionally to soy/regular milk.

We switched to soy milk after a sinus cold that seem to last awhile last year. After that we didn't really go back to cow's milk. We later switched to Almond milk. Personally, like the idea of my kids drinking almond milk - almonds are great for you. And, it tastes good. It has more of the consistency of milk, whereas rice milk was too watery - and we drank skim cow's milk. If you aren't feeling 100% comfortable with soy than try an alternative such as almond or rice milk. That's what I did and I'm glad it is working out for us.

I agree with Cindy. One of our girls has lactose issues and we weren't comfortable with the soy milk. They've had almond milk (which is great), but we all prefer the vanilla rice milk from the refrigerator case. You can buy it in a box, but that is more watery than the cartons they sell alongside the milk. Everyone in our house likes the vanilla rice milk. I use it in my diet shakes and in "healthy" cereals. Right now, I'm giving DD half milk and have rice milk and she'd doing great. I think in a few weeks she should be able to handle the straight milk. Which is good because its cheaper. But the vanilla rice milk has become a staple here and will probably stay that way.
