Molly is 14 months now and she has been throwing major fits the past few days, she tries to communicate and if she doesn't receive what she wants then I or dh pays for it. Is it too late to start signing with her or to try to teach her? I have the books just have never really been consistent with any of it. What do you all think, any signing experts out there who could give me some advice?

I say it can't hurt to try! We started with signing around 10-11 mos, but they really didn't start using the signs until 13-14 months. I would try the Signing Time DVD's, start with Vol 1-3. They are great!

Its never too late to start signing. Don't expect immediate results but it can't hurt! I'd start with the points of contention: diaper, eat, drink, tired/sleepy and play.

Ditto Kelly -- we love the Signing Time DVD's. It's definitely not too late -- it will be awhile yet before she masters speech, so any signs she learns in the meantime will be really helpful!

I think it's not too late to start! You don't need DVDs or anything. Just start doing signs whenever you say certain words. Here are some useful ones:

    eat - fingers to lips
    drink - thumb to mouth
    more - tap fists together
    diaper - pat hip
all done - palms down, wave hands away (like when they start sweeping everything off the table)

At that age, maybe they'll catch on really quickly, who knows? Or it might take a while. But it is SO awesome when they start signing! More sign=less whine! :)

It's definately not too late! We're just really getting into it now, and boy do they catch on fast! I had a book for a while, but never really used it consistently, mostly they new milk and used it for a lot of things. Then I got the first Signing Times video, and they love it, and I think that was the kick start I needed and I got another book and sign to them every chance I get. Even if they don't look like they're paying attention, you'll be surprised at how much they pick up. Mine are still not talking yet, but they sign quite a bit.

It's not too late. I started signing with my girls because they refused to talk to us. Once we began signing with them their speech took off and they started to communicate with us. I am 100% sure that the signing helped their speech because they would say the words as they signed them.
