So I was looking up SIDS just to get the latest info. We have heard lately about fans and now even putting baby on side so I just wanted to know the most up to date stuff for the twins.
I came upon this and it really scared me. I just wanted to pass it on to you so you could look at it and take from it whatever you want.

That's one of the reasons why we are a no vaccination family! Thanks for posting. I'm glad you are taking the time to read through the debate. I tell people what we do, but I don't push our views. I just always suggest people do their reading and research ahead of time. Being an informed parent, either view, will always benefit your children.

I work on the Mom Baby Unit of the busiest OB hospitals in Ohio. Unless told otherwise by your doctor, PLEASE PUT BABIES ON THEIR BACK TO SLEEP!!!!

Thanks, that one is very confusing. I hear so many different things. I hear not to because of spit up. Then I hear they will naturally turn if the spit up keep on back, then I hear put on side. I am very confused on that one.

It's all so confusing...it's a wonder any of us made it past the age of 2 with the information our mothers had. I'm pretty sure I chewed on lead-based paint, slept on my tummy and occasionally stuck my fingers in the light socket.

Vaccines, circumcision and abortion are the 3 topics that are guaranteed to lead to hurt feelings. Reader beware.

    Articles disputing your original link:
    New Scientist
    British Medical Journal
    Journal of Child Psychology
    Parents Magazine
    BBC News

Those links all talk about the autism/vaccination debate...what about increased SIDS risks? That's new to me and very scary, although it looked like most of the research in the link in original post was outdated.

As a health researcher I suggest that people take anything from someone's blog or a "doctor's" website with a grain of salt...or a whole carload. I personally see nothing in that article or Dr. Schreiber's work that constitutes reliable scientific research...if someone has some I would love to see it.

You know it's kinda funny (and sad). My grandmother makes a point of always telling me that after she had my mom while she was still in the hospital breastfeeding her she would be smoking at the same time. That's just weird. Could you imaging what would happen today!

My mom dug up her 1979 pregnancy pamplet her OB gave her when she was expecting me so I could look at it just for fun. It warned heavily against caffiene and outlawed coffee, but gave a generous limit of 2 alcoholic beverages per day...nice.

It's just so funny to me how different a few years can make. Makes me wonder how much we REALLY know. I can only imagine what our kids will be told!

Definitely do your research...I waited for a few months until I felt that my kids had good head control and then my mom and mother in law begged me to start laying them on their stomachs to sleep. I was so desperate to get the kids to sleep, I listened...and I watched them like a hawk checking to make sure they were breathing every 5-10 minutes. I finally felt that they were fine (it took a few weeks).

Just remember, eventually your babies will be able to roll over and will sleep on their stomachs on their own.

I agree. Things change all the time. i think we need to do whatever we feel the most comfortable with as their mothers.

What's really bothering me about SIDS is the fact that no one has been able to figure out the true cause of sids. And even if you put your baby face up on their backs, they may still die from sids. My chiropractor feels that it is because the birth process causes a misaligned spine and causes the nerves not to be able to communicate properly

    I have heard that too.
SIDS is my number one fear with my kids. And I think you are right, no one really knows. The best we can do is take all the "tips" we can get and do our best. Decide what ones we want and what ones we don't. What's so frightening is that even if we do EVERYTHING there is just no full proof answer right now. That is why I wanted to put that link up. I mean if someone told me to put mustard on their door because the smell keeps them awake enough to prevent SIDS I would consider it. All I know is that I want to learn as much about it as I can.

My opinion would be to do what you feel is best, there is so much information and mis-information out there that it can make things very confusing.

I would talk to your pediatrician about any of these important questions you may have and are worrying about :good: even if it means contacting a pediatricians office before your babies arrive.

Do you use anything to keep them on their back or should you leave them unencumbered?

unencumbered (unless its a swaddle when they're very very little)...

my DS could roll by 4 mos and once he did he could get on his tummy and slept like a little lamb...DD on the other hand couldn't care less about being on her belly till she was over a year...Ped said once they could roll you could leave them as they were and they would be ok...

When I had my 16 year old it was lay them on their bellies. When I had my 14 year old it was on their side with a rolled up towel behind them. Now it's on their backs.
Truth is, I don't thin kanyone knows what causes SIDS. I doubt they ever will. Trends change so much.

My pedi says let them fall asleep however they will and then once they are asleep roll them either onto their backs or side and they will be fine. That's what we do. At least until they come up with the next step of having them sleep suspended in some sort of pressure chamber.

Hang in there and do what works for your family.

A good way to deal with the fear of vax is to do a delayed vax schedule. There's no reason to give a 2 month old that many vax and aluminum at once. "The Vaccination Book" by Dr. Sears has a great breakdown of the pros and cons of every vax and also gives a delayed vax schedule that he uses with his own patients.

Well, that was what I was getting out of the article. that there was a concern tell about 4mo, so why not do that vac at 5 or 6mo?

The tips we give new parents every day is...ALWAYS on their back to sleep and NOTHING in the crib at all except the baby. No blankets, no bumper pads, no stuffed animals, no pillows, no smoking........A heavy sleeper is all that is needed in the winter months. SIDS happens most on baby boys, in winter months. No one knows why. Good luck! I know I prayed a lot those first 6 months!

Here in Australia one doctor on T.V. talked about how some babies actually die of "super bugs" like MRSA which is in our community everywhere. He felt that having a baby on its stomach on a couch would pick up these types of environmental Staph and the child dies. I had also heard about the fan and how colder climates are more at risk. I'm from a colder climate and I can see how some babies can get overheated with all the blankets, clothes and the room temperature.

    interesting debate.

When my I had my 16 year old it was on her stomach, my 12 year old, her side, my 9 year old her back. There has always been a fan on in the room and they have all been just fine. I think in today's world we are information overloaded. So much so that parents are scared to death to do anything anymore. When my twins get here, I will put them on their back to sleep, they will get the same vaccinations that their sisters got at the same times, and I know that they will be just fine. I know that these are very hot button topics, but I just think there is too much information out there and it's just making enjoying our babies all the more difficult.
