Sick babies - cough and eye gunk?

Both my guys have had a cough and runny nose for a few days. I thought it was all related to teething and/or allergies. Now they have this eye gunk that they've never had before. They don't have a fever and are basically in a good mood most of the day (apart from what I attribute to teething.)

Note: I of course am sick as a dog (high fever, awful congestion, sore throat - it's not strep...I just got tested today). So far they don't have what I have.

Do I need to be worried? I'll call their doc in the morning but wondered what ya'll thought. We have experienced bronchiolitis in the past, and I don't really think it's that.

    Thanks! Shannon

I had that exact same flu and it was miserable! My guys also had some gunk in their eyes but I just kept cleaning it with moist cottonballs. They didn't get very sick but if your little ones get a high fever or seem like they need to go to the doctor then don't hesitate to go!

I hope you get better soon!

Shannon, that's awful. I would keep an eye on the gunk (pardon :pardon: the pun) and the cough. If you don't see an improvement in a few days, I would still go see my pedi. Never hurts to be too careful.

I would give it a couple of days and take them in if there is no improvement or they seem worse. Do the whites of their eyes look pink?

That eye gunk is actually pretty serious. You should bring the babies to the doctor today. We just had our share of eye gunk in our house. Kate had a sinus infection that spread to her eye. She needed antibiotics, and we had to be very careful because it is very contagious. Despite our efforts, Lindsay got it a week later. She needed a shot of antibiotics, a 5-day round of oral antibiotics, plus antibiotic eye drops to get rid of it. The ped was very concerned. An untreated infection could cause blindness or spread to the brain, so it is serious.

It could be bacterial or viral and the way to tell is if the gunk is greenish/yellowish. If it's viral it has to run its course but if it's bacterial you need meds. So, call the doc and have it checked out.

Have you been outside a lot lately? Mine get eye gunk when we go for walks or to the playground. The whole evening following our outing I have to clean the green out of the corner of their eyes. Just a thought.

We have the same thing right now. I thought my ds scratched his eye, but it looked gross. He is stuffy and has a cough, too. I had him sleep in his bouncy last night to keep him elevated. He seems to be in better spirits this morning and his gunk is gone.

Let me know what you decide to do. I feel like crap...this stinks
    Hang in there!!

Or a moist warm wash rag.

Our pedi prescribed some eye drops for us that really worked great!
