How do you handle an extremely loud (usually happy) shrieker? He's only 4.5 mos, so it's not like he understands he's doing anything incredibly irritating and that he should stop. It is so ear-piercing and sometimes I just want to yell at him to STOP IT already! Do you just ignore it? Distracting is hard, sometimes giving him attention makes it worse - although ignoring doesn't seem to work either. I assume he's just discovering his voice, but I wish he'd do it in a different way. Anyone else have a shrieker this young? Please tell me it's a phase that doesn't last too long?

Dillon does it. He seems to each week be getting a bit louder and louder as he is learning he can get louder. It does get ear piercing but he does it when he is happy and having fun so I enjoy it. Yes I usually end up with a headache by the time he is done but at least he isn't crying lol

It will pass! Josh was our shrieker. He would wake up in the morning and just scream at the top of his lungs. Not once, but over and over and over. Needless to say, he was my alarm clock.

Now what both of them will do is scream in their jumperoos, but they are having fun so I don't mind.

The screaming for no reason but to use his voice, that got to me. I think it lasted for about a month.

Now when they wake up it's cute because they are saying dadada & mamama.

One of my girls does this as well! I wish I could say mine have gotten over this phase, but if anything its just louder! It drives me bonkers!

I don't think there is anything you can do except to tape it and play it over and over again when he is a teenager sleeping until noon.

Our two are/were shriekers, too. I actually really enjoy it b/c they do it when they are really excited and happy. I don't think there is anything you can do about it - just get earplugs! :)

I will say that our "peak shriek" time was around 5.5 months and as they've added more sounds (da da da, na na na, etc.) - they shriek less and less.

    It will pass! :)

Yes, this is the type of screaming I'm talking about. Not the cute I'm excited and happy squealing, but the just lying there let's see how loud I can really get for no reason screaming over and over and over. It sounds like he's hurting his vocal chords and straining his voice! Sometimes he's so loud it makes his sister cry :( Hopefully he'll get over it and be onto something new soon!
