SHOVELING in table foods...how to slow him down?

Joe really enjoys table foods and self feeding...however he shovels EVERY piece of food on the tray into his mouth at the same time. So, I've only been putting one piece of food on the tray at a time...which...is....driving....me....crazy....

I would just stick to purees, but he's refusing them (spits them all over me) for nearly a week. Any advice?

We went through that. We did the same thing and gave them one piece at a time. If we gave it all to them they would either shove it in their mouths or throw it on the floor. The good news is that it gets better as they get more used to self feeding.

BTW... I see that you are in Seattle. I'm in Issaquah!

Ben had this issue, and still does at times depending on the food. So the only solution we found was to give him the foods slowly, piece by piece. Yes, it gets old. I wish I had a better solution!

I think it's a phase. Amy does it with foods she really likes. It frustrates me partly because she wastes food -- because she crams her mouth so full, half of it falls back out, and then she won't eat it because (I assume) it's all wet & half-chewed. I try to put just a few pieces on her tray at a time, which means she is whining for more every 10 seconds or so.

Sarah doesn't quite do that, but she will put a whole piece of something in her mouth even if it is too big. So I have to cut her food up small, even though she knows perfectly well how to bite off a smaller piece. Otherwise she gags.

Sigh -- I guess there is a lot to learn about eating!

My twins are almost 2.5 and one of them still won't finish chewing before putting in more food. I stopped the one piece at a time thing a while back as it was driving me crazy! Now I just keep saying, "One piece at a time!", over and over. He is better than before and has never actually choked on the food. But it is frustrating.

I pretty much let them figure it out on their own. They weren't gagging or choking so I just told them that the bite was "too much" and watched closely while they managed to eat it anyway or spit half of it out. They were never squeamish about grabbing the somewhat soggy piece and popping it back in once there was room. Also, getting started with silverware really helped because they can only scoop or poke so much at once. [IMG]

Any chance Joe could teach my girls how to do this?? [IMG]

Believe me, it's not as effective as you'd think. It's almost like he just wants to feel it in his mouth for a while then let it roll out into his lap. It is frustrating when you can't get them to eat.

I just keep reminding myself that someday they'll be teenagers eating me out of house and home. (Oh wait, with the cost of formula & Zantac they're already doing that!)
