Should my babies eat more?

Last night we did our last feeding at about 9:30 or 10. Then they feel asleep for the night. We slept till around 6am and Grace was so hungry she was beside herself trying to drink her 4oz bottle and it ran everywhere, but Hope couldn't seem to wake up good enough and she only drank 2 oz. So i burped them and tried to feed Hope more but she would not take it. She didn't even seem hungry. When I was trying to give her the rest of her bottle she was smiling at me. And then i got them dressed and put in their crib so I could get ready for work they feel back asleep. How can I get Grace to calm down and drink her bottle instead of being a little sloppy piglet and how can i get Hope to eat more? I no they aren't the same baby but it worries me that Grace always seems to eat more than Hope. And people are always saying they look so small and this really ticks me off. How big are they supposed to be they are only 9weeks old.

    thanks,
    missy

I am going to be no help except to let you know my ds is just like your Grace, little piggy wakes us up crying until he gets his bottle while dd could care less most of the time, just wants to smile... not after going 8hrs but most every other feeding.

Some babies do need more than others. If they are acting hungry by all means, feed them more. But if they seem satisfied I would not worry about it. :hug99: You are doing a great job!

My guys ate different amounts for the first 4 months - I just figured that was normal (if they were 2 years apart I doubt I'd even notice). I only worried when James' intake went WAY down (due to silent reflux). Now at 5 months they both take five 8-oz bottles a day. If somebody doesn't finish a bottle I don't worry much. I might offer them another ounce or two to tide them over an hour later (if they're still up) - just to make sure they last 3 hours (if possible).

How has their weight been at their pedi appointments? If your doctor isn't concerned about their weight (and you don't think they look underfed, mine certainly looked chubby!) I wouldn't worry about force-feeding them. It is true that most babies will take what they need - I stressed a lot about them not drinking enough in the beginning, but their growth was fine. There is a huge variation on how much babies drink, there is a chart on TS in the first year handbook sticky (top of first year forum) - if they are on formula, this is a rough guideline:

People have no idea how small or large a baby should look. I just had twins myself 6 months ago and I couldn't guess the age of a baby if I just looked at it!

that is just the thing. 2 weeks ago they were eating just like they are now and i thought grace was bigger but my husband took them to the pedi & they both weighed 9lbs 3oz. So i may just be worrying for nothing. Seems like their is always something to worry about with 2 babies. thanks for the reply missy

I think its SO true that all babies are different. For some odd reason by the end of the day my girls almost ALWAYS ate the same. if one has a light feeding they make up for it the next time! They will be 9 weeks tomorrow... were born 5lbs 11oz & 5lbs 9oz at 34w6d. They are up to 6 oz!!!!! Every 2.5-3 hours & sleep well at night... & they are just barely cracking 8lbs. I get the 'their so tiny' comment all the time!!!! I either ignore it or point out that they were 5 weeks early & both over 5 1/2lbs!!!!

If they are gaining don't worry about it!!! My kids are the type that do the minimum on growth... they eat like pigs but gain JUST enough that the ped doesn't get worried. My son did the exact same thing & still does... even though he eats MORE then most kids his age.

My sisters daughter is 2 weeks younger... but was almost 2 weeks past due. She was 9lbs 4oz & is now almost 12.... she only eats 2-4oz a feeding, but gains WAY faster.

I say don't worry!!! If you are concerned call the ped.

I don't think you are behind. I think I just got lucky for a couple of nights. We woke up last night at about 4am to eat. that was fine with me because I worry about them eating enough, but then i don't want to wake them to eat because they always fall back asleep in the middle of the bottle.
    thanks for the reply

Definitely not behind...mine don't sleep through the night (which the definition is flexible for different people). Mine sleep a good 6 or 6 1/2 hour stretch now...and we had work to get this far. I anticipate sleeping through the night (which for us will be 7 hours) in the next couple of weeks.
