Should I loose hope?

Hello! My name is Alex and finally, after 5 IVF tries we manage to be pregnant..Everything was fine, we found out they were twins on the 14 of November (2 sacs were found). Yesterday we went for another ultrasound the doctor told us that I'm 7 weeks and 4 days pregnant, we could see both heartbeats but one baby measured 11,5 mm and the other only 4,4 mm. We became very sad when the doctor told us that the smaller one will stop developing and will be reabsorbed by the organism and that he would be very surprised if the fetus would still be there in 10 days from now (when we'll go back for another U/S). Should we loose hope totally or there is still a chance that the small one will develop normally like the other?
    Thank you in advance

    Hi Alex,

I know excatly what you are going through! My twins measured about the same distance apart at 8 weeks and I was told I would lose one by 12 weeks (body absorbing the small twin). We were devestated and really were at a loss. However, when I went back at 12 weeks my small twin was still growing!

I am now 18 weeks and still have both twins (I have my 18 week scan on Thursday). It has been complicated though. The small twin is still measruing eight days behind the other one but is growing at the same rate at this stage. At 12 weeks they told me that it most likely had a chromosonal disorder (trisomy 18) and that was why it was small. We had a CVS which came back clear - no chromosonal disorders - much to our relief. I have been told it will be touch and go throughout my pregnancy, but as long as the little one is growing at the same rate we should be ok.

We are remaining positive and as I said to my DH if we don't hope in our little babies who will?? So don't lose hope just yet. The more research I do into different size twins the more common I find it to be. Do you know if they are identical or fraternal? If they are fraternal it is possible that you had a second egg fertilised later (known as superfetation) and I have read this has been recorded as occuring as late as 28 days after the first egg.

So don't give up hope just yet. I will also hope for your little ones and you will be in my thoughts and prayers.

    Keep us updated,
    kittymum

Hello!!!Thank you so much for your prompt answer, you made me smille and have hope again.... my twins are fraternal and i want to belive that one implanted after the other, that's why the difference of sizes....i really hope that's the case and that the little one is still here in 10 days from now....what made me even more sad was the way the doctor was talking about him, as if he was already dead, when i was seeing the little heart beating!!!!i cried a lot and i told my husband that untill i see the contrary in the next U/S, my little ones will be ok....why doctors have to be like this?they just rip our hope and hearts without mercy!
Thank you very, very much for your good words and i hope from the bottom of my heart that your little one will be ok!we have to have faith,i belive.....

Big hugs to you. That would be so hard to have a doctor talking that way. I don't know much about this but the previous poster's story is very encouraging. Praying that all is well with both your babies!

NEVER lose hope..... read up on some of my posts - my baby B (boy) has measured way behind since the beginning and he is still holding on a growing a little a at a time....
The best advice I have is realize that what is meant to be, will be. All you can do is take care of yourself the best you can and stay positive....

    Big

Unfortunately I went through that with my first IVF and had a "vanishing twin". BUT they never saw a heartbeat on one of mine. SO don't give up!!!!

If they are fraternal, the little one was probably a late implanter! I had a u/s at 5 weeks, we never saw a baby, then I had one at nine weeks, we only saw one, but doc saw a second sac, but was not too sure if there was a baby. However, thankfully, he never said ANYTHING about the 2nd sac...probably because he didnt want me to be upset or stress over it...afterall that is HIS job! At 13 weeks, I had another u/s, and sure enough, I have two little hearts beating!

I always say don't stress until there's clearly a reason to stress. Try and keep the faith, and don't concentrate on the negative vibes your doctor put out there. "See" in your mind's eye those little ones growing-growing-growing. I'll be thinking of you, Alex. Best wishes to you.

I am so sorry you went through this. It was the same with me. The doctor even called a trainee ob to come in and have a look at my scan and stood there saying that my 'feotus' had no chance and would die! I think sometimes doctor's forget they are dealing with real people experiencing real emotions. You know yourself and your body, go with your instinct and don't let the doctor's stress you out about 'maybes'. Now 18 weeks in I only listen to 'definatelys'. Thanks also for your thoughts for my little one. I will let you know how they are going after our scan tommorrow.

I had an u/s at 6w where they saw two sacs but didn't tell me. At 10w I had an appt with my dr who told me there was a twin but it was non viable. I even asked what are the chances its growing and she said oh Erica its not growing there is one baby. I was to go in for an u/s at 10w just to make sure the twin was resorbing..........and you guessed it two heart beats two babies!!!!

hang in there you never know

    Good luck

Don't lose hope, don't give up! I was told at 7.5 weeks that I would have a vanishing twin. I have two beautiful girls now. Congrats on a successful IVF and wishing you a healthy pregnancy.

My first IVF my twins looked similar size until about 8 weeks then one looked alittle different. I did lose that twin to vanishing twin. This currently pregnancy there was some difference but not as large however after a few weeks it had caught up.

The fact that they both had heart beats is very promising.
    Don't give up hope... Ever.
