Its not selfish to want adequate prenatal care for yourself and your babies!!!!

Please consider finding another OB practice. By now you should have had a level II ultrasound to check the babies organs to make sure everything is developing properly.

I know a lot of people hate big OB practices with lots of doctors--because they never know who is going to be in the delivery room when they go into labor. But honestly, I go to a big OB practice with 6 doctors and 6 CNMs, and a bunch of NPs, and I love it. If I have a problem, they see me right away. They can always find someone to see me. If I have questions between appointments, I leave a message on the phone nurse line, and they return my call within the hour. If its an emergency after hours, the on-call doctor takes my call within minutes. I'd rather have this level of attention than know for certain who will be delivering my babies, you know? They also deliver at the top labor and delivery unit in the country, so I have no doubts about adequate care in the hospital.

I went to a practice with four dr. and a np. We were required to see all of them at least once so if your main dr. had an emergency or was not on call for your delivery the other drs. would be familiar with your case.

Also, since I was a high risk pregnancy they met every week during their staff meeting and our case was discussed and where I stood. I was fortunate to see my main OB the whole pregnancy and he delivered me with the help of his associate.

Ultrasounds.....I had one every month from conception.....I had 2 Level II US in the first six months.

If you are not getting the care you should, I would find another OB and have my file transfered immediately.

I do agree with the other ladies... the first practice I went to had 4 docs... our insurance changed and for this pg I now go to one with 8 doctors!! But I really don't mind. I see all the doctors throughout my pgs. You know for sure you will get one of them. if you only have one doctor the odds are pretty good you won't see that one doctor..she or he could get called to an emergency c/s..or be on vacation, etc... so then you'd wind up with a complete stranger. I'd rather at least know what my possibilities are for which doc I will end up with. At the practice with 4 docs there was one I couldn't stand...but I didn't get him! yay!! And at this practice so far I've liked most of the doctors.... the one woman I think was a little on the brusque side....not sure if I'd like her sympathy during labor!! ha ...

As far as contractions... not sure if a male doc could adequately describe them anyway! LOL!! and even a female who has never had them can only describe the typical contraction....

Here's my experience with them... when you get them...you'll know it!! Your whole belly tightens up with a bh ctx... and with a real ctx you throw some real pain in there too...

Some women also have back labor. If you have any chronic back pain at all during pg that just won't go away no matter what you do, then it's always a good idea to be checked by your doctor. Most women that go into labor, but don't realize it find out later that what they thought was a backache were really ctx. And then of course there is the occasional woman who just doesn't feel anything at all..and the only way that can be watched for is by routine cervical checks... during my twin pg they did these after 20 weeks via vaginal u/s at the perinatal office..it's much less invasive than a manual cervical check. And it does tend to catch women whose cervixes are likely to open or thin early due to twins. Since this is your first pg they really should have checked this already. you also should have had a 20 week scan already. If you haven't yet had your cervix checked or a 20 week scan then please do switch doctors ASAP...these are pretty much baseline things they do with most First time pgs regardless of having twins. So if they haven't done it with your twin pg then in my opinion they are being negligent. you should be seeing a peri at this stage in the game too.

If I were you I would RUN not walk to another OB. I'm sorry yours is having family problems but you have to do what's best for YOUR family. Twin pregnancies need a lot of attention. You are not at a stage to play a waiting game with a doc. Take your care into your own hands. Get some recommendations and call around. Once you find one you want to see, call and tell them you are in a mega hurry because of what's been going on. It's a very critical time to be attended too. Good luck!

i agree you should find a new OB now.

FWIW, my doc is in a practice with 3 and i've seen all three docs, b/c any one of them could deliver my babies. depends on who is on call the day i go into labor (hopefully that is how it will happen.) there is a chance that this other doc could deliver your twins.

also, are you seeing a perinatologist?

I agree with this advice. I switched doctors at 26 weeks. It was hard, but it was the best decision for us. My OB could not give us the level of care I needed (her own admission), and so I started seeing a peri full-time for the reminder of my pregnancy.

    I agree. NEW OB! PRONTO!

Thing is, if you complain, they'll label you as a "problem patient". You'd be better off getting a copy of your records next time you go, and going to another doctor. Don't say you were unhappy with their service - you have to think of something less offensive to say to the new doc, or they'll be worried about you, too.

Call everyone you trust for a recommendation for someone else. Quickly. You might want to try asking a nurse or receptionist at your current doctor's office for advice. There are probably other patients with concerns as well. It's not in anyone's interest for you or your babies to not get the best care possible. Good luck!

Well, if you are concerned I would consider other options. One thing to keep in mind is that if the OB you regularly see is not the OB on call in your practice when you go into labor you may get the other guy... If this is something that you are not comfortable try talking to your regular OB about your concerns and request a transfer if you are still uncomfortable.

I will warn you though. This is easier said than done. I really like my OB, but am not comfortable with the level of experience they have with twins... I will be thier 5th twin pregnancy this year and they normally only deliver 1 or 2 sets a year... I have been wanting to change, and have been met with a lot of resistance. I am not trying to discourage you, but once you decide to make a move or not stand firm in your choice.

Good luck! I have found that my best resource for twin pregnancy information is right here and I rely on a lot of the information in the book When You're Expecting Twins, Triplets or Quads. If you don't have the book get it. It will help you distingush contractions and help you get on track with what to expect during a multiple pregnancy!
