Should 2y.o. drink camomile tea?

So I'm still trying to figure out why DS won't nap this week. He crashes around 5 every evening and he has a very hard time going to bed at night now, too. Never had this problem before. Last night I had a thought: maybe I should try some camomile tea? But I wondered if he should (if he even will) drink it. I know it's just herbs and water. Have any of you given your little ones tea? I'm hoping it will soothe and calm him so he can relax and fall asleep...

I have not used it since my kids were small. I read an article in "American Baby" , if I remember correctly!
Anyway, it suggested that tea for colic. I'm not sure if it really worked or not, but I think the recipe for newborns was to steep 1 bag in 6 oz water for 1 minute. Then they could have 1 oz at a time and up to the full 6 oz in a day.
Since your child is older, it doesn't seem that having a cup before bed would hurt. You might try American Baby's website to see if that recipe is still around (it was probably 2 1/2 years a go). Also, you might try adding a little Splenda to get him to drink it.

Thanks Destini. I just looked around AB site and couldn't find anything... There's not much anywhere online. But I did find some info on the tea itself and I think it should be ok... [IMG]

    I'm going to try it.

FWIW, our previous au pair, from Germany, told me it was really common to give teas, including chamomile, to infants and toddlers in Germany. I never did, but I would if they'd drink it.

A friend of mine gives her 2 yr old "sleepytime"tea as part of her bedtime routine. I'm not sure all what is in it but I'd bet camomile is. My step-MIL is from Sweden & when she visited she wanted to give it to Rachel when she was crying - at 6 weeks. I said no because I thought she was just too little but I think it is common there even for infants.

Last year when they were sick our pedi told us to give them some warm tea to help. I think as long as it's caffeine free than you should be ok.

I love Sleepy Time Tea. It's a mix of chamomile, peppermint and spearmint (I think that's all).

My SIL's pedi suggested it for her nearly 2mo stating that it helps with gas. If it is safe for that young, it has got to be safe for an older child.

When DS had colic, his pedi suggested that we try it and peppermint tea to calm his tummy and to make him sleepy. He loved it but I don't remember if it worked.

Well I bought the wrong tea... I meant to buy camomile but I grabbed Sleepytime instead. That's ok, though, because I think it tastes better.

So we tried it tonight and it didn't help. He only drank half of his cup though, and he sipped on it over 2 hours so that probably defeated the purpose! I just couldn't get him to sit down and drink it all up.

We'll keep trying, though. Thanks for all the advice! [IMG]
