My girls have to have shots on Wednesday afternoon, my question is do you premedicate? When? Our appt is at 2:30 we live about an hour fron the peds office
I always give my kids a little Tylenol before shots. Not sure if it helps, but I feel so bad for them, I just want to make ite easier on them...
I recommend pre-medicating with tylenol. We did not for the three month shots and about 2 hours after we got home, when they woke up from their nap, all h*** broke loose. We did pre-medicate prior to the 6 mos. shots and had no problems! Amy **I give it to them in the DR. office just prior to the shots.
I do not pre-medicate, and I try hard not to post-medicate either. Just one of those things that depends on what type of kids you have I guess. I feel awful for them, but they recover usually by the time we get home from the dr. office (5 min away). We gave DS some Tylenol last time because he got a slight fever afterwards. But other than that they have never had Tylenol or drugs of any kind. We've been lucky.
My Mom is a pediatric nurse and she offers Tylenol to the parents in the office prior to giving the shots. She has the parents give it first and then goes to prepare the shots so it has taken affect by the tme she gets back. It takes at least 15 minutes for the Tylenol to kick in and it lasts about 4 hours so as long as it's in that window, you're fine. I prefer to give it 15-30 minutes before because then it is strongest in their systems. I forgot to give it at the 2 month shots and had the same experience as Amy... 2 hours later, after naps, they woke up screaming and were inconsolable. We gave it then, but had to listen to ear-piercing, heart-breaking screams until it took affect .
Our pedi gave us tylenyol samples to give right before their 2 month shots. We just went ahead and gave them the meds every 6 hours for 24 hours after the shots and they never had a fever or much fussiness.
Yes. Mine got their 4 mo vaccines yesterday. The nurse gave them Tylenol before the shots. They slept the majority of the night so I didn't continue with it until this morning. They both woke up with fevers. Dr. Sears website said it takes 45 - 60 minutes to kick in so I'd time it accordingly.
I've never given Tylenol before shots, only after (for the yucky feeling/low grade fever/etc). The pain of the shot is so quick, it's over before you know it. My babies always calm down right away.
We only medicate if we must. Even I only take meds when I have to. After the 2 month shot, the nurse gave them Tylenol. That was the only Tylenol they have had related to shots. Recently I gave DD some as I was at my wits end with her teething. Nothing else was working. Some babies do not really react to the shots. DD just whimpers, no cries and DS cries for about a minute and then goes to sleep. The first day they sleep a lot but when they are awake they are fine. I really think it depends on your kiddos.
I give them tylenol right after the shot either in the doctor's office or immediately when we get home 15 minutes later. Then I usually give them one more dose 4-5 hours later and then see how they are feeling to assess if they need more... usually not. Their first shots I didn't give Tylenol after and poor Ana woke up from her nap screaming every time she moved her legs. Poor kiddo.
