Shot reaction vs skin infection?!?!

My boys had their 1 yr immunizations on Monday. They got their pneumococcal, Hep A, MMR, & some other mix one that I forget (the last in their series of it). We were told to watch for localized skin reactions to the MMR on their left leg, so I was quite surprised to notice something on Conner's RIGHT leg.

Below his injection site is like a dime sized, red, raised, hard area & then below that is the same thing in a quarter sized. He's not EXCESSIVELY fussy, but isn't himself & he's not running a high fever or anything (maybe low grade, I honestly didn't check). It's spread slightly since yesterday, but not bad....but it has grown since Monday.

Both our triage nurse & our Ped want him seen this afternoon (they're double booking us in). It could be a random reaction or maybe a skin infection. The 2 shots given in that leg were the Hep A, which has VERY RARE side effects, & the pneumoccocal, which he's had twice before without problems. Unfortunately, we don't know exactly which shot was where...they're going to ask the nurse when she gets in if she recalls (I'm not sure why they don't document that...they just document which shots were in which leg).

I work night shift & worked all night last night (and work again tonight) so the boys are at daycare. I'm all worried that they're going to miss something. Our Ped said to give him Ibuprofen so I just called & told them to do that. They said he's been fussy, but it's also his 3rd day at this center so it's hard to tell. I told them to outline the area in pen so they can ensure it doesn't spread & to call me with any changes in his behavior or any temp.

Has anyone had anything like this happen to their kids? Was it a reaction to the shot? A skin infection? Or something else?

I was so troubled with the idea of delaying shots & such that now I'm really kicking myself about it. Ugh...if only you could turn back time!!!

I haven't had this experience Andrea. :hug99: I hope he is going to be ok. I would keep watching it and call the pedi if nothing changes or things get worse. :hug99:

We have had the red area before where the shot goes in...it is red and a little hard but never had it spread much. Getting it checked out is best.

Both of mine got that same reaction (red, raised area, hard spot underneath) from the chicken pox vaccine. I did take them to the ped just to get it checked out since it had been 2 weeks since they got the injection. Totally normal.

Take them to get checked...even if it's just a reaction, the peace of mind will be worth it.

My sister's DD had this reaction to the shot, they told her it was normal. Can't hurt to have it looked at though. Too bad they got more than one at a time, hard to tell which one did it...

Saw the doc. He's not sure if it's questionable staph or an odd shot reaction. He's treating him for staph anyway since he thinks he has a staph infection in his diaper area. Also found out he's got a flaming ear infection! Poor baby!
