Kate has been walking for about 3 weeks now. I think I have given her enough time to get steady on her feet before putting hard soled shoes on her (they are Keds). When I put them on, she reverts back to crawling or will only take a step or two. I know that I need to give her time to get used to them, but since she won't walk with them on, how can she get used to them????
Any suggestions on how to make the transition or a great soft shoe that isn't like a Robee?

    Thanks!

Have you tried something from Stride Rite? They have shoes for beginning walkers and the soles are very flexible.

my kids did the same thing...what I did was when we were in the house they wore their robeez or barefeet, but if we went out in the car or for a walk in the stroller they had to have shoes on..they figured it out one day and then wanted their shoes on all the time even inside...

Even if she is just crawling in them, she's getting used to the feeling of them on her feet. Eventually they will start to feel familiar and she'll start walking in them. I would just give her more time.

But it's probably also a good idea to get her some soft-soled shoes to wear part of the time -- it's better for their feet. My girls have to wear hard-soled shoes at daycare (it's a rule), so I make sure they wear Robeez or go barefoot at home. There are also shoes that are in between Robeez and hard-soled -- things like Pedipeds, Preschoolians, See Kai Runs, etc. You can probably find a bunch if you google something like "new walker shoes" or "toddler shoes." HTH!

DS did that too. We kept robeez on in the house for a few days and he eventually got comfortable with them. Then when we went to a harder sole (stride rites), he cried the first few times we put them on, but eventually got the hang of it. I would say get some softer soled shoes to start with... it's better for their feet to start with softer soles when they are learning to walk anyway and it will probably feel less awkward. When she has the hang of that, move on to the harder soles. HTH

Are you sure you have the correct size? My friend's daughter did that, and then she took her to be sized and found out her shoes were 1 1/2 sizes too small.

Mine went from barefoot to Preschoolians and walked in them right away. They had been walking for over 2 months when I got them and were pretty sure of themselves so that may have made a difference as well. Still, I think having a thin sole is better because they can feel the ground under them. They're fairly expensive shoes but you can get a 40% twins discount on 2 pair.

Same thing here. Give her more time. Grace would just sit in the floor and cry everytime I put shoes on her in the begining. I started doing it for a few minutes everyday until she was comfortable with it.

Try Stride Rite shoes, they are a little expensive ($45 a pair), but they are flexible.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Like someone said, she'll get use to it. Just keep putting her shoes on. Fact of the matter is...she's walking now and still very new at it and is learning how that feels, and trying to get her footing etc. and then we put shoes on them and change it up on them. That's okay. It's all part of the learning process for learning to walk. Mine had a little pair of canvas keds that they wore out. I'd say that those are going to be pretty good shoes to start her off in. She's a walker now so she's going to try to walk in her shoes, but at her own pace. Don't remove the shoes from the equation so as to make it easy on her. So long as she isn't freaking out and having a moment when she has her shoes on, keep putting her shoes on when she needs to have them on. It's just all really new and weird for them. She'll figure it out and get use to it and be pretty proud of herself at the end of the day because of it.
