She will not drink ANYTHING and only one wet diaper today

She has had an unexplained fever - no cold, runny nose, throwing up, or rash - nothing to indicate why there would be a fever. She has had the fever for only 24 hrs. but since it was unexplained and it is a Friday, they had us bring her in today. She was acting normal, just had a fever.

Anyway, the ped said everything looked fine except that her throat was pretty red. I told him she had only had one wet diaper today but he was not that worried because she was acting like her normal self and eating. She ate great - she just was not drinking. He thought maybe drinking hurt her apparently sore throat. He said to watch her close and if her fever was not gone by MOnday or she started acting lethargic or not like herself then we would test her for a UTI or look more closely.

Of course, once we got home this evening she would not eat or drink. Actually, I got her to eat a bunch of watermelon (but no real dinner) so that made me feel better. She still did not have a wet diaper and still had a fever around 101.8. I tried to give her water, milk, and a popsicle but she was not having any of it.

I hope she is okay. Over the course of the day she had blueberries, a banana, two clementines and a bunch of watermelon - oh yea, and an apple. I hope this is enough to hydrate her as she certainly was not drinking anything.

The only other thing I notice is that her breathing is a little fast while she is sleeping. Not laboured, just faster than normal. She was like that last night as well but I forgot to tell the DR. opps.

Sorry for the ramble, I just hate worrying alone and DH is not much of a worrier! I just wish she had a cold or something that would make the fever make some sort of sense.

Have you tried giving her any tylenol or motrin? Maybe it will help her throat feel better and she'll drink. Give her pedialyte if she'll take it. I hope she feels better soon.

I second the tylenol. Also I try not to give my girls juice but when they arent feeling well I will put a splash of apple juice in their water and they drink it.

    Hope she feels better!

I have been giving her Motrin. I also do not give them juice, they have never had it but for a small sample at our farmers market. I think that is a good idea if she is still not drinking tomorrow though.

Just an FYI that might help you feel a bit better... their breathing becomes faster when they have a fever. It is the baby body's way of cooling itself. It shouldn't be too alarming unless she seems to be struggling to breathe. The doctor told us this with one of the many high fevers we've had recently.

I hope she is feeling better soon! It sounds like you are doing everything just right. Just keep pushing fluids tomorrow. :)

When mine get like this about the only way I can get them to drink is by using a medicine syringe and giving them one syringefull at a time, it normally works!

Poor thing... I hope she feels better soon. When we are afraid of dehydration and they won't drink anything we cut a pedialyte-pop in half and let them suck on it. That usually works and then when they have a little hydration they're more apt to take more.

We had a mysterious nursing strike a month ago that was the beginning of a nasty cold. When I came down with it and got the HORRIBLE sore throat before any other symptoms showed up, the mystery was solved. It sounds to me like you're getting lots of good juicy (and vitamin-packed) fruit into her. I hope it resolves itself, soon, though!! Don't you hate how, as a mom, you HAVE to worry, no matter what anyone else says?
