My DD is totally frightened of my dad. Everytime he comes near her or looks at her she starts crying! I mean my dad is the nicest person you could ever meet, he doesnt shout, isnt nasty and definetly loves her to bits so i just dont get it! He had a goatee for years and thats what we thought she was scared of so he shaved it off to see if that would make a difference but it didnt she was still crying and screaming everytime he looked at her. I dont know what to do, he is making a joke out of it but i can see it upsets him. Any ideas of how to get her to like him? x

MY girls went through stages like that. I think it's a guy thing honestly. I don't think it's anything your dad is doing. But, if you think about it...guys are so much more intimidating with the deep voices, they are taller than women. I think it's just stage. My girls went through that with my dad too, broke his heart, but they warmed up!

obviously because you didnt mention your little boy being scared aswell im asuming he is fine around your dad?

let your daughter see when your dad is playing with your son and giving him cuddles and such.

My girls did this too. Lily got over it with my dad, and now as soon as she sees him she feels the need to pull on and play with his mustache. Grace still takes some time to warm up.

My FIL recently passed away, after battling cancer for several years. They were both always pretty leary of him because he had a trach and just looked generally ill. I felt bad they acted that way around him, but they really didn't know any better.

At that age (just over 12 months) mine were wary of anyone they didn't see literally every day. They see DH's parents every couple of weeks, but after months of this are just starting to warm up to them. What helped for us was to keep reminding the grandparents not to come on too strong. They would come over and just sit and chat with DH and me while the girls played. Once the girls got used to their presence, then the grandparents could actually approach them. But they are still wary of them much more than they are with us and their daycare teachers (i.e., the only adults they really do see every day).

It's also possible that his shaving off the goatee actually freaked her out more. They often don't like it when people's appearance changes. (Mine look unpleasantly surprised whenever they see DH or me without our glasses on.) They'll get used to that in time, though.

I think him shaving his goatee off helped a little as she actually got within 2 feet of him without crying!! Jack is absolutley fine he plays with him and sits with him. My friend who i only see every couple of weeks had them yesterday for 1/2 an hour while i went to the dentist and they were perfectly fine. I just dont understand it. Lets just hope it is a phase and sometimes soon she will grow out of it x

Riley is going through the same thing with my Dad. She wants nothing to do with him. Hopefully they grow out of it.
