She can't say "cat," but she can spell it!

Sarah is still way behind in speech -- she talks a lot, but even I only understand her maybe 30% of the time. It's frustrating for her and for us! And it maybe makes me worry a little bit that she's not as bright as Amy, even though I know I shouldn't.

Anyway, we have a Thomas the Tank Engine "talking dictionary" that DH bought at Costco. You spell a word and then press the "definition" button, and it says the word and the definition. For some of them, like the animals, it also makes the sound.

Since the day we got it, Sarah has been fascinated with the "meow" sound that it makes if you spell "cat." She will constantly ask us to make it. And she does recognize most of the letters of the alphabet (brag brag). But she still mostly just pushed the buttons at random.

Then, yesterday, I was in the bedroom folding laundry and she was playing with the toy in the living room, and I suddenly heard, "Cat -- a furry animal that meows! Meow! Meow!" I went running in and she was cracking up and looking so proud. As soon as it stopped, she bent over it again and pushed C-A-T and the "definition" button and did it again!

OK, so I was rolling my eyes at DH when he bought that thing (he is the king of spontaneous Costco purchases), but it looks like it was a good idea after all. :)

    That's awesome, Alden!

Joe isn't a very articulate speaker either, but I have had the same, glowing "Einstein" feeling when he manages to recognize any random letter of the alphabet and can say it in its entirety (skipping F, N, and saying "H" instead of "W").

I think it's just a relief to see the wheels turning even if they aren't as vocal as their womb counterpart or peers.
