She can't eat carrots...

I need a little help with food ideas. My DD is having horrible. horrible diaper rash every time she eats carrots or anything containing carrots. We are now on stage 3 foods and just about everything (Lasagna w/meat, turkey dinner, chicken noodle) everything has carrots in it. So she is very limited as to what food she can eat. She is also having a hard time with the texture of the stage 3 foods. She either spits it out or won't close her mouth once it is in there.

I just don't know what to give her. What are some foods I can make at home that she can eat. Can she eat spaghetti O's if I chop them up?

I want to give her more than just sweet potatoes, green beens, squash, and fruits.

I could really use some help.
    Thanks,
    Carol

If you're making her food at home, I think you can easily avoid carrots. We do eat a lot of carrots around here, but here are some other suggestions of things the boys like:

Lentils (cooked with a little onion, chicken stock) then pureed
Yogurt (mixed with anything and everything--veg or fruit)
Broccoli (I cook it like a thick soup w/ a little potato, then puree)
White beans or chick peas pureed
    Poached chicken in little pieces
Cereal bars (they LOVE these just broken up or mashed)
    Avocado

Hope that helps! Also, at around 9mo they started having a little easier time with the chunkier textures.

So no one has any suggestions?

Does everyone put carrots in everything?

I really like this site, but it seems that whenever I ask a question, I get hardly any feedback.

I have a friend who makes all of her own baby food. She'll make a pot roast (in the crock pot), giving her and dh dinner and then blends up the rest for baby. She started doing this around 7 months. You could easily turn your families dinner (carrot free) into a mushed dinner. This is so silly, but my mom gave me the Magic Bullet blender and you can adjust how much something is blended. You could start by really blending something and gradually let it get a little more texture.

I wish I had more advice...I'm sure I'll be asking the same question in 9 months! :)

Maybe if she cant tolerate the stage 3 foods go back to the stage 2 and that way you can buy the single food items without carrots and gradually go up to 3's again. Also you could do the stage 2 and add a bit of your own texture like some mashed avocado or banana and gradually increase to chunks. Earths Best does make a Sweet Potato and Chicken (no carrots) that is a Stage 2 that is pretty pureed and my boys seem to tolerate that one and I have a gagger. Also what about making your own batch of pasta?? Hope this helps. We are not quite there for the Stage 3's just yet.

I'm sorry you feel that way. :hug99:

My kid's never cared for the stage 3's. I made things like tracymcg suggested, and either mixed them together or fed them separately. We went from stage 2's to finger foods fairly quickly.

We have a FY handbook, with some links to ideas on feeding which might help you. It is in a sticky at the top of the forum. I can also suggest you check out wholesomebabyfood.com....it is a great website for food ideas!

    Hi Carol,

How old is your girl? She may not really be ready for stage 3 food and some babies just never like them, like one of mine. My twins have a milk protein allergy and I had to start avoiding so many foods I can't name them all. I am still battling finding a variety of foods to feed them b/c milk protein is used in just about everything from bread and chicken nuggets to most all processed, packaged food! Now, I sympathize with your dilemma because carrots ARE in most every kind of baby food on the market. You might stick with single ingredient baby foods and add your own pureed chicken and rice you cooked for example. Whole Foods had this tiny little pasta that I use to this day but I started them on it at around 10 months.(I also found a really small ABC's pasta at Food Lion) I just made spaghetti for us and the tiny pasta for them and we shared the sauce. They love pasta. You may need to steer clear of all the "easier" prepared food for now and just feed her food you make yourself until her system develops a little more. Hopefully she will not keep her sensitivity to carrots! Think of all the things she can eat! She can have whole grain breads, waffles, pancakes, rice, mashed potatoes, green beans ( or any beans mashed up or blended well), spinach, broccoli- you name it! My two love kidney beans cooked with a little garlic powder and mushed up well. They also love bananas mashed with an avocado- it is so yummy! I hope I have been of some help to you and you find an easy way to make sure your little girl gets what she needs. I hope the rash clears up soon too!

i remember making fun of my sister for giving my nephew avocado and cottage cheese together, but now i do it and they LOVE it! it's great mix of protein, calcium, good fat and a little texture. it took them awhile, but the like it a lot.
i also puree blackbeans, just tried chick peas(they aren't sold yet!), we get tofu and mix that up with things. that is how i am adding texture. i try to have a little something with a lsightly chunkier texture to it at each meal. DD usually does fine with it, but my son has more problems adjusting. i just do what they say "try, try try" and he usually will eventually like it. I haven't tried the stage 3 stuff yet. i haven't even tried any meat yet. i am trying to get most of their protein through dairy, grains and beans right now. Do you make any of your own things? i didn't think i would, but you really can get more variety and it really isn'st hard at all. i just cooked black beans and pureed and froze them tonight in about 15 mins. after the kids went to bed.

that is funny about the carrots- my daughter can't eat them either, but just because she spits up for HOURS afterward. it doens't seem to bother her, but there are little orange spots all over the carpet. lovely. <_< i hadn't really ever heard of a "carrot allergy" before. apparently so! anyway, you can get good vitamin A from squash and sweet potato . I also try to split an egg yolk between them every other day, which is supposed to be high in vitamin A too. (i never knew that!) I know it seems boring giving them the same stuff all the time, but it is all healthy, and they like it! just try to give them a little bit of something with it. i sometimes have to sneak the bean puree in with some cereal or a little of their veggie for the day to "hide" the texture and/or taste, but i am trying to get them used to eating it on it's own.

my sister gave me a book, it hink it's super baby foods (? right anyone?). it has been very informative and has lots of good ideas. (i don't do nearly all of what it suggests- i don't think it takes all that lnog to make SOME baby food, but i am not one to go overboard!!!) but it has a nice appendix in the back about various fruits and veggies, when they can be introduced, how to buy them, how to prepare them, etc. Also what kindi of nutrients they are best for.

good luck. somehow i thought it would be easier when they started solids- what was i thinking?!?!?! i sometimes think "gosh, when they can feed themselves, it should be better", but i know that isn't true! i can only imagine the mess, plus they will start to actualyl say "no" to certain foods! oh.... i won't think about that now! :p
