ok so some of you may have read that i went to triage last night with contractions and blood in my urine...have a horrid UTI...YAY.

so i see the OB this morning and guess what? now i have gestational diabetes and am having to go to a class tomorrow and get the monitors and all the information on what i can and can't eat. UGH!

i swear, if there is an ailgnment for pregnant women, i am getting everyone.

she said that my levels were so high (didn't get the number) that she wasn't going to put me through the 3 hour glucose test and just diagnos it as gestational diabetes.

on the plus side this could have a lot to do with how crappy i've been feeling.

on the down side, i don't know what i'm supposed to eat/drink/how i'm going to gain weight now since everything i ate was high carb/high sugar and meats just don't cut it for me anymore.

so what can you tell me about gestational diabetes? and did yours go away after birth???

Kristine, I'm so sorry about the UTI and GD. You are right, it may be why you've been feeling so cruddy. :( Hopefully they'll get you on the right track and you'll get some energy back. :good: I know my friend had GD with both of her pregnancies and it went away after she gave birth, so that's good. Plus you will be eating healthy, so you'll feel better and still get the nutrition you need for you babies. Definately tell the nutritionist that you've been having trouble gaining and I'm sure they'll work with you on that. Good luck!

again, another way for protein and to gain weight is MILK PRODUCTS.
    Milk
    Yogurt
    Cottage cheese
    Cheese
ICE CREAM (but in small amounts seeing as though you have diabetes....)

How about whole milk? I drank that from the beginning of my pregnany, and lots of it, because my husband insisted it was better for the babies. I gained at least 12 lbs alone in the first trimester, and I think that had something to do with it. I later learned the whole milk really didn't make a difference for the babies, so I blame my husband for making me extra fat during my pregnancy!

milk would be good if i could tolerate it. i'm not lactose intolerant i just hate the taste. always have even as an infant.

i'm hoping the glucerna shakes i bought will be enough.

do you like cheese? Really, the shakes are good and will help, but to put more weight on, I would suggest eating other things too.

I don't know about Glucerna, as I don't know what all is in them.

Peanuts, great! Peanut butter, good protein and fat!

FYI - your body was probably spilling glucose in your urine contributing to the UTI.

    Vegetables (no root veggies)
    eggs
    beans
cheese (straight milk has a lot of lactose which is a sugar)
    meats
    soy products

There are other things, and it's not so much eliminating carbohydrates, but just a matter of taking in less carbohydrates. Your body needs carbohydrates in order to function and with two growing babies, they need carbohydrates too. You should ask your doctor how many carbohydrates you need to take in on a daily basis and go from there.

I am one week two of my GD diet (or alternate eating as I call it! ) It isn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. You can pretty much eat the same things, just less of them. Each meal/snack they give you a certain number of "carb choices" you can have, like for lunch I can have 3-4 carb choices. 1 slice of bread is 1 carb choice, cheese is considered a meat substitute so that doesn't count towards the carbs. So you can have a grilled cheese sandwich and it would be 2 carb points. Veggies are great, the bummer for me was fruit and fruit juice. I LOVE O.J. and Grape juice and both are very high in sugar. It is probably a good thing that you don't care for milk as well b/c that is what I miss the most. I can have an 8oz glass of 1 carb point and I was used to drinking at least two BIG glasses a day...I love milk.
Also, I found that white bread makes my sugar go up much more than wheat eventhough the both count as the same number of "carb choices." Oh, and cereal....that REALLY makes it skyrocket but I still have it every once-in-a-while because it is SO GOOD, usually at night for a treat though instead of for breakfast. They say that the morning is worst b/c pregnancy hormones make the sugar go up after breakfast so that is when you want to eat the least amount of carbs. (this is where I keep having a problem, it doesn't seem to matter what I eat my b/s is high after breakfast most days)

Sorry to hear you are having all these troubles but remember they are only temporary and taking care of yourself and the babies is your #1 job right now. Take care and hang in there!
